OT - Philly Question

My daughter started a new job this June in Center City. Since then she's been staying with a friend in Fairmont. She just called to say she's likely taking an apartment in Brewerytown near Gerard College.

Being she's my youngest and add to that I'm wayyyyyyy too overprotective, how much of a worry is that area if at all? I like that the landlord is on site and she says all the right things to me at least but would like some feedback.

Not an expert on the area but it's definitely a location where one block you can be in a nice area and a few blocks away a not so nice area. It's been gentrified but it's in North Philadelphia so she would need to be careful. Definitely better off closer to Fairmount.

I would agree with S_Janowski. Fairmount is a decent area and Girard College is not far from Eastern State Penitentiary which is a pretty big tourist draw. There's quite a lot of young people in that area. I don't believe that there is a subway line that runs up there but there are lots of buses. I think the closer you stay to Fairmount Ave. (South of Girard College) the better you're going to be.

OK, you've got my attention. Her bf who is also from Philly is helping her look. He seems cool with it but what does he know? He's in his 20's too lol.

I would recommend these neighborhoods that surround Center City. It's where most of the millenials live and they're pretty safe. The further you get from Center City from these neighborhoods the more dangerous it becomes.

Graduate Hospital
Washington Square
Bella Vista
Queen Village
Northern Liberties (hipster area)

You can walk to Center city within 30 minutes in any of these areas or take a short bus ride (except Northern Liberties, have to take the subway). I live in Queen Village and love it around there. Mostly young people/families.

I assume you are now in or past college. In that case, a lot has changed since you went to high school there. The boundaries of the safe areas have been steadily expanding. But I do not know enough to say whether Brewerytown specifically now counts as safe.

Yes that it is correct, it is right next to Fairmount...but you don't have to go far from Fairmount to be in an area you don't want to be in. Philadelphia is a city of neighboorhoods and the climate can change fairly quickly within a short distance

Graduate Hospital (which border Ritttenhouse towards South Philly) for example, was a not so great area 10 + years ago. It's gentrified and is a pretty good area right now. The next neighborhood right next to Graduate Hospital (10-15 minute walk) is Point Breeze which is not a safe area. It's starting to gentrify but it would not be an area for your daughter.

The area close to the old state pen is actually quite nice. Lots of restaurants, cafes, etc.
