So we have a PSU fan writing a favorable article about his favorite school. What a surprise. And I love his statement that the trends are unfavorable for Rutgers. If you want to talk about trends, why not show the stats of where Top 10 NJ players went from 1995-2005? Even better, 1965-2005. When you measure the trends against prior statistics, the 2005-2015 trend looks pretty damned positive. Further improvement is needed, no doubt, but the direction is the right one. And while Pitt and PSU are on top in the Pa recruiting sweepstakes, RU has made some significant inroads in recruiting that state. And lets talk about Notre Dame. Notre Dame (and for that matter Ohio State under Woody Hayes) owned Top 3 New Jersey talent since the 50s, probably the 30's for ND. That doesn't get completely turned around in 10 years.

Rutgers is relatively new to big time football and even though moving up in the hearts of NJ HS talent, it will be awhile before the best of NJ HS football puts RU up there with the traditional powers when it comes to thinking about choices of schools to play their college football at.
Though the chart in that blackshoe article can't be denied, it can be looked at as part of the perception problem Rutgers faces against its recruiting competition in the NJ HS ranks.
Rutgers isn't considered a name brand , yet, in its own state and needs to recruit in places that look at RU FB as a potential power. Right now NJ HS talent and their advisers are a little skeptical of that potential power classification and need to see it on the field, not in media stories.

Once RU was considered a back up school at best by NJ HS talent and their advisers , that has ended and RU is in the mix for most of Jersey's talent, though too many still look and go to the traditional programs because Rutgers isn't looked on as a name brand like most of the schools it sees the NJ recruits with plenty of offers go to.

Rutgers is moving up in that department, but winning against the best will cement their place with the best when it comes to a NJ HS talent's College choice.
Right now RU is pulling in a good class, from outside of Jersey, that will help recruit Jersey HS talent in the future and make that chart irreverent .

The article was written by a Penn State fan. Penn State if anyone noticed aren't getting the Top 3 in NJ this year because Ohio State, and Michigan will beat them in any recruiting battle. The situation is always changing and given 2-3 years out if Penn State is fourth behind Ohio State, Michigan State and Michigan, will recruits even consider Penn State a top tier football school? I don't think so and their recruiting will slowly die down. Meyers, Harbaugh, and Dantonio have proven they can win on the field. Franklin is considered an average on the field coach.

Rutgers need to recruit the top 11-30 recruits from Pa, Ohio and Michigan. Recruits that want to show their home state they made a mistake by not recruiting them over the national recruits and give a 150% effort to beat their own home state school. If we're lucky, we can move up a notch and bypass Penn State.

I thought it was a pretty fair article with some good analysis. Basically shows that RU has some work to do in keeping the recruits at home. I doubt anyone here would disagree with that.

The fact that many NJ residents don't really root all that much for Rutgers is certainly no surprise to those of us who grew up in the state. Truth be told, Rutgers hardly tried ,for too many years, to even get the state to back them! I taught for close to thirty years in NJ and when I would ask my students who they rooted for in college, Rutgers was rarely mentioned.
But, they are now in the overall premier conference in the country IMO and the time has never been better to work at changing that perception in a state so heavily involved in pro sports.
Of course, they have to do everything possible to not be a doormat in the BIG. With the exception of football, little else even came close to being a team to be held in high regard by the new conference. That has to change!
