Dude trip

I'm brainstorming for ideas. Next September for my birthday weekend I'm going to invite some of my close friends to take a 3-4 day trip (no wives/girlfriends or kids). I've got some ideas but am looking for suggestions on what to do. No parameters other than it has to be in the continental 48 or Canada. Anything from going to a national park or going to a city and doing certain activities. Any suggestions?

A lot depends upon your interests. Love sports? Try to go to as many pro baseball or football stadiums as you can? Love historical stuff? Go to as many things in NY, Philly, Boston and DC as you can fit in. Love the outdoors? Go west and try to hit as many national parks as you can get to.

Of course, for all of those things, you're not going to do anything but make an brief appearance at all of those things.

Go to Corvallis labor day weekend. Can fly to Seattle or Portland and make your way there. Play some great golf, hike around mt hood, visit the MoPop museum in Seattle and go to the game our saturday.

I'd stay away from Eugene unless you want to visit an empty football stadium. Cool city though, check out the historic track stadium.

Even the lower elevations are high enough so as to avoid the humidity that you’re used to. By September, the hillsides won’t be green any longer, but the kids are all back in school, so that’ll cut down on some of the vacation traffic.

You can drive around and see the sights and take as many short or longer hikes as you want. Take a horseback ride. Play golf. Help me stack alfalfa bales. Or not.

Anyway, these two parks are right next to each other. Fly into Jackson Hole Airport and you’re literally in Grand Teton National Park when you step off the plane. If you decide to do this, or if you want more info before making a decision, let me know.

Absolutely wait until the kids are back in school. That place was insane - people practically everywhere.

Yeah, the topography and land ownership issues just won’t allow for road expansions to handle all the summertime traffic. An effort was made maybe 20 years ago to annex land south of town to expand the town in that direction and it failed miserably. The thought was to try and keep things the way it was. However, the rest of the world simply didn’t get the memo. So now it’s just crowded and that’s the way it will stay. Not bad this time of year, though!

Maybe take a look at Utah. Several national parks there as well. Moab is a cool town. Would be a longer drive to and from the airport in SLC, but worth a look, especially if you guys ride bicycles.

Springdale (Zion National Park) is also worthy of a look.

Bryce Canyon is also close to Zion and worth a visit.
