I hope we get a lot in the medal matches, 'cause I paid the 9.99 with absolutely no intention of being up at 2 AM!

Obviously, CowboyUp61 is not a true fan.o_O However, I must admit retirement and not working has some advantages.

I think in the words of Garth Brooks, "I am much too young to feel this damn old". I need all the beauty sleep I can get, but still get my wrestling "fix".

(OK, bad pun, but I couldn't help it)

Not sure if I should post results of the first day as CowboyUp and others were going to watch archived matches. For now I will just say we have two wrestlers in the finals.

Mitch McKee and Mark Hall are in the finals both going 4-0. Heinselman is 1-1 and Kollin Moore won his first two and then lost. McKee down in two of his matches but showed remarkable determination to come back and win. Hall was down in his semi match giving up the first takedown but came on strong in the end to win 10-3. I must say track wrestling does a better job than flo in navigating to the matches you want to see and showing upcoming matches. McKee wrestles Abdula Akmedov of Russia in the finals and Hall wrestles Isa Shapiev of Uzbekistan.

Just got done binge-watching Mark Halls matches. Amazing body control, scores so well from what would seem to be defensive positions. Will be fun to watch him compete with Ringer, Dake, and Burroughs.

Yes, would be very interesting. Unfortunately (fortunately?) with the new UWW weights coming, we may not see all those matches.

I've seen 3 of the 4 interviewed recently. Even if they add a 79 kg class, JB said he's staying down at 74 kg. Ringer and Hall both said this was their last time making 74 kg, they intend to move up. Dake is the wild card, I think he'll probably go up also if JB medals this year and gets a bye into next year's WTT finals.

Does that leave some 70KG to move up to fill the void? JB is like us, not getting any younger. Looks like the top 3 challengers may move out of the weight.

Day 2 draws are out, looks like Daton might get the returning champ in round 2. Time to Cowboy Up!

Yeah, I think there will be a lot of jockeying happening because of the new weights and the possibility of having two day weigh-ins. A lot of opportunities for guys, including Chris Perry if he keeps competing.

Team scores going into the Medals round and Khakhstan is ahead by 19 points. India, Russia, Japan and the United States all tied for 2nd with 24 points. 43 points for Khakhstan looks insurmountable so the battle is for 2nd place. Belarus is just a point behind at 23 with Korea having 22 points. Rounding out the top ten are Azerbaijan with 19, Kyrghastan with 17 and Poland with 16.

Obe, where are you seeing that? The best placement Kazakhstan has is 5th @ 50KG, none of their other wrestlers will medal today. Don't see how they can get ahead.

Edit. I think you are looking at wrestler count, it looks like that is doubled for KZSTAN. they show 16 freestyle wrestlers on their list, which is impossible.

According to Jason Bryant, team scores are based on placement points.

10-9-8-8-6-6-4-3-2-1

So with that schedule, Kstan has 6, US minimum 24 depending on results.

McKee lost by fall at 1:00 in 1st.

Late nights do strange things to people. You are correct that is number of participants although on Track they are showing 43 wrestlers for Kzstan which apparently is for Cadet,Jr. Sr and womens. We have three medalists out of the four wrestlers today with a first, second and third. That is great and we should do as well or better tomorrow. I am going to bed at 6pm to get up and watch at 2AM tomorrow morning.

If Fix wins that one, he will probably have Khashalov (Azerbaijan) who won gold last year at 55, and I believe is the one who beat Daton. We will get to see his improvement quick!

Russia will probably pick up a 10th place point @ 74 KG to move into a tie. I don't know how they do a criteria for 7th through 10th, but he did win 2 matches.

Heinselman won a match, which is better than 2 in his repechage did, so maybe we get a point there to move back ahead.

FYI, we are tied for first with Russia with 30 points.

In the likely event Daton faces Afgan Khashalov (AZE) in round 2, I looked up his credentials. In 2014 he lost to Spencer Lee in the 50 kg Cadets final. Last year he won Juniors at 55 kg, beating Badrudinov (RUS) in the final. Badrudinov had beaten Fix in the first round, then Fix stormed back to take bronze. This year Khashalov won the European Juniors (against his round 1 opponent Salim Naim (Bul), who Daton teched in last year's repechage). He's also wrestled on the senior level, taking 9th at 57 kg last November at the Golden Grand Prix. Tony Ramos took 10th at the same tournament, but I don't think they wrestled.

Go Daton and go USA!

Fix won his first match by tech fall, Heinselman wins, Steveson has a tech fall and Valencia had an 11-2 win over an opponent that thought he was in MMA.

Daton has Gulomjon Abdullaev (UZB) next. He lost to Khashalov (AZE ) at Juniors last year then came back to take bronze, along with Daton.

Valencia wins by tech fall. Heinselman loses 2-8. Mike I wake the roosters up around my place.
Daton has 11-0 tf over Abdulaev. 1-0 after 1 period. Daton made several great counters in the 2nd period for takedowns.
