We lose four senior starters in Collica (149), Crutchner (174), Boyd (184) and Schafer at HWT.
Who replaces them?
Also...as good as Nick wrestled at 125, do we throw Fix into the mix as a true freshman?
What are your thoughts?
Go Pokes!

Strong possibility of an upgrade at 174 with J Smith (JUCO NC and had a great RS year beating an AA or two).

At 149 we have former AA Martinez in the room redshirting and he will battles with Lewellen who also had a great RS year beating a few AA's.

184 could be Moore (highly ranked recruit who will be coming off a RS or two guys who could make he drop to 184 in Mardsen and White. Both has had mixed results at this level but shown flashes of high end talent.

HWY - Likely a battle between Anderson who was a pretty highly ranked recruit and he will come off a RS and JUCO NC transfer Andrews.

Does anyone know how Anderson has looked in the wrestling room. His few open tournaments he did not seem to do well. He lost in state his senior year and did not place in Fargo. Our redshirts did not seem to wrestle as much as in the past. I think we need to recruit a HWT. maybe from Russia because we missed out on Steveson. Our recruiting must get better with out of State recruits. I think we need an asst. coach who recruits great, travels a lot, has a big name, with lots of skills and then Smith comes in and finishes the commitment. Did I tell you that Penn. St. also has 2 of the top 5 recruits already committed for 2018 also plus there is a younger Neville's star HWT who is like a junior in high school. I sure would like to be in the running for National championships in the near future but we need commitment to wrestling and better recruiting. Also Ohio State will challenge Penn St next year ( a little) but we won't.

Where do they fit in relationship to the ones who AA'd this year (Micic, Amine, and Massa)?

Their solid weights look like:
133 Micic So 2017 AA
149 Panteleo Jr 2016 AA
165 Massa So 2017 AA
174 Amine So 2017 AA
184 Abounader Sr 3x NQ beat several AA over the years
285 Coon Sr 2x AA

I don't think you roll with Fix next year, unless he just dominating Picc. A redshirt, will help him acclimate and will also allow a year for weights to shake out.

I see
Picc
Kaid
Dean
Geo or Boo (if Boo grows into the weight)
Joe
Chandler
Jacobe
Anderson
Weigel
(Your guess is as good as mine. Transfer?)

I hope we approach strength and conditioning differently next year. We honestly looked underpowered at several weights. I can't count the times we got horsed out of or into points.

I'd like to see Fix and Gfeller redshirt...but neither may want to? We potentially have two guys each at 4 weights that can AA. Picc, Fix, Brock, geo, boo, Gfeller, and Heil. Then we have 3 weights that look very slim.

The room is stacked on the bottom half! We need to remedy that, because that's been the issue since the 10 year winter started in 06.

Hmmm...color me not willing to count a high school senior as having the ability to AA before ever stepping on a mat in college. Not to knock them, but there's so much more that goes into being an AA in college...more matches, the grind of an entire year at an extremely higher level. Not saying they can't be, but I just can't put them up there yet.

What about redshirting Joe and the incoming freshmen, and assuming Blaylock can put on the weight, move him up to 157. He is very tall and I am sure his frame could handle more muscle.
Then you could have a proven AA at 149 and Blaylock has shown that he can roll with Martinez.

The silver lining about a couple of our guys crapping out at nationals is we aren't losing as many points as we thought we were.

It is crazy to think about the lineup we could throw out there and it has zero chance to win.

Well, I think that Fix is immune (gfeller) to the grind to a certain extent. These guys don't ever stop! HS season, Fargo, snake pit, who's #1, flonats and freestyle. An ncaa season is like working out on vacation to that schedule.

Assuming weight and injury aren't an issue, I would expect AA out of it...at the least.

Either way, we need some juice at 184, 197 and 286. I also think we need a change in style. The PSU hammers are unconventional in that they hold the ability to wrestle like chandler Rogers (but better) and Jordan Oliver. I've always been pro 5pt move wrestling and its better for the sport!

Wow. He's what, 5'11"?
Really hoping he'd try to cut to 84. he wasn't a huge 97.
Ineligible at 184. Too lean, certified at 195 and walking around weight is about 212. Only has about 5% body fat. Was getting hard to stay at 197.

All my inside sources(None as I am a legend in my own mind) indicate Fix and Gfeller will RS. I say it makes sense if for no other reason that no matter who we put out there it will be Penn State. We need to save our Ammo Someone asked about the heavyweight. If either of the two we got this year were any good at all we would not be pumping up an average at best 197 pounder to heavy weight. We need a transfer here and we just lost out on Gable Steveson this weekend who is the best out there as he is going to Minnesota. Nic Pic will be at 125 next year and will be even better. Kaid should and will be drilling all off season and summer in the underneath position. He needs to hone his bottom position to go with his offense on his feet. IMO it will be either Tristan Moran or Lewallen next year at 141 with Gfeller redshirting. I am putting my
money on Jonce Blalock at 149. I think it is possible that Joe will RS next year as he struggles to make 157 and then go 165 the following year. Chandler Rogers will be back at 165 and Jacobe Smith will enter the line up at 174. Both should do major damage at those respective weights.
We need Keegan Moore to step up and wrestle well at 184 next year. Preston will make more strides next year at 197 and he is just now starting to be more offensive on his feet. This is a very good lineup but it will pale in comparison to Penn State who returns 5 national champions. I am not pessimistic just realistic.

That shocks me. He looks noticeably smaller than Weigel. Schafer walked around at about 220 and had the big frame. Easy to see that transition. Hard for me to see it with white. Wish him nothing but the best though.

Our weight classes may really be wasteful of talent in 2 years if the lineup works out like I think. Next year 25 Pic, 33 Brock, 41 Heil, 49 Martinez or Lewallen, 57 Blalock or Sheets, 65 Rogers, 74 Smith, 84 Moore or Marsden, 97 Weigel, HWT White or Anderson. This is sad in that we have 3 weak weight and our top recruits from last year will be red shirt freshmen and we don't know if they will win those weight classes. Our staff is recruiting like 10 years ago and Penn. St. and Ohio St. already have lots of super talented recruits for 2018 and 2019. We got Fix and Gfeller for 2017 which is great but they are in weight classes where we already have top young wrestlers. We need to pick up the pace in recruiting or be left behind, which has already happened. I hope Coach Smith adjusts. I bet nobody even knows who we are recruiting for 2018 or if we have even started recruiting anybody for next year and beyond. We had a good year this year but finished 3rd. We need to be better than good if we are to win a National Championship. Next year there is not any hope. The next year I think 25 Fix, 33 Brock, 41 Gfeller, 49 Lewallen, 57 Smith if he can make weight, 65 Rogers, 74 Smith, 84 Moore, 97 Weigel, HWT White. Good lineup but probably Penn. St. will destroy us again, unless there are big changes. I am not talking about changing our head coach but.

Sheets left OSU last semester. Gable Stevenson will still be in high school next year. We will be good again next season but Penn State could have the best team in history. I said could or they could start fighting with each other and self destruct.lol

Of Penn State's 142 points, how many of those were "surprise" or upset points? Nolf and Retherford were pretty automatic, as was Nickal's finals appearance. Bot how many of the other guys can repeat those same points next year? For instance, I don't think Joseph is a sure thing for the same amount of points next year, in fact I'd argue he's more than likely to trip up and lose a match in the tournament than win the national championship again. Hall's the same way. Had it not been for a controversial call, he doesn't make the finals.

I'm not saying they're going downward...you have to remember they did all this without #2 seed Suriano. It could have been a record setting performance. And he's surely going to be up there next year as well.

Just that not all returning points are "safe". Or to quote Orwell, "All returning points are equal. But some returning points are more equal than others."

BTW, not implying OSU's points are "safe" either. Certainly no one expected Chandler to turn it on the way he did. And Picc obviously outperformed most people's expectations. And if you read this board in January, you'd be surprised to know Joe Smith earned his second All-American award.

OSU must have all those points, and get more points where they don't expect.
