How many kids? What ages? What do you like? Where are you staying? How long?
I used to work there many, many moons ago.
Look up fast passes. Not sure exactly what they are but I know a lady that is a Disney junkie and she swears by them. You can also monitor lines real time with an app.
Plan for huge crowds and long waits.
Don't plan on spending much time at the Studios, a morning at most. Most of is closed and is being bulldozed for a huge expansion.
You are going to miss out on the opening of Pandora at Epcot by a few months.
Night Ranger will be doing free nightly shows from the 24-27 at Epcot. They are always a lot of fun.
Eat at Morimoto's Asia at Disney Springs.

You probably need to hurry and buy your tickets. If you are staying off site, you are allowed to start reserving your 3 fast pass rides 30 days out from your visit. The good stuff fills up fast and you're already at a disadvantage because people that stay at the Disney hotels are allowed to book 60 days out.

Parking is $20 a day. You can park very close at Epcot, AK, or studios. You park at magic, take a tram, then take the monorail or a boat to the magic kingdom. Give yourself at least an hour to accomplish that.

The best way to see the top characters is to do a character dinner. We have always liked the one at animal kingdom for lunch and the food is good if you like mediteranean/african/Arab food. Splash mountain is my favorite ride at MK, the yeti roller coaster at AK, tower of terror at studios. Epcot doesn't have a stand out ride but I like all of their numerous leisurely rides. Are you doing a dining plan? Do you have magic bands and fast passes? Have you done your dining reservations yet?
There is a ton of stuff to do beforehand, particularly game planning your dining experiences and setting your reservations as soon as possible, stuff is ALWAYS full. Are you doing Park Hopper? Try to gameplan your park times, fast passes, etc., to maximize your experience.

I don't think you should do a dining plan if staying off property. You can park hop using the monorail or the free buses if you pay a little extra on your tickets. If might be worth it as your kids are bigger. With my little kids we usually don't have the energy to go to another park. You won't have a magic band but all of your fast passes will be linked to your plastic admission card. You will need to become adept at manipulating your fast passes and dining reservations using the WDW app. Next time you go, you should try to stay on property. It makes life easier. You won't have a need to rent a car and the transport to and from the airport on the magic express is wonderful. They pick your baggage up for you. You just have to hop on the express and hey bring your baggage to the hotel later. They will also will take your baggage to the airport for you so you just won't have to mess with the long line at the baggage check. It is a misconception that it is too expensive to stay on property. There were rooms at pop century and all star movies for less than $125 a night when i looked last. We are staying at Caribbean beach for a week in early may. Room was cheap there also. We stayed at Sheraton vistana over thanksgiving off property. It was cheap, but we are going to stick with on property from now on.

My wife knows the score. I'll spend a **** load more to go to the carribean , Asia or Europe for th kids. I'm not futzing around with Disney world
It's not, it's amazing. But because it's amazing, many people like to go there and you'd be wise to maximize your experience with a little adult planning ahead.
This is it, in a nutshell.
And it assumes you actually enjoy spending time with alleged "loved ones."
I just remember getting in line to ride rides and walking around to get every character to sign my autograph book. There was none of this fast pass business or dinner with characters. Of course I grew up when my dad was teaching and starting a business so we didn't just have tons of money either. Was still a great time and they had the TMNT at that time and I still remember how cool it was to meet them. lol
It really is a fun time for all. Maybe big teenagers would be too cool for it. If you go in the off season it is not that crowded. Fast pass works well and turns more into ride scheduling. Hit your fast passes and meander about in between when it is peak season. Maximizes your time doing stuff with minimal waiting in line unlike the last time I went to six flags.
I would agree that having a general idea of the rides or areas of the park that you plan to hit are a great way to make the day easier.
If you can't get a FastPass for a specific ride ahead of time, plan that as the first thing you ride when the park opens to minimize your wait.

Get your disney account set up and buy your tickets if you haven't already. Download the app, which will show you realtime where you are in the park, where everything is, and also allows you to manage your fast passes for you and your group, once you add them.
We always stay on property. The additional benefits outweigh the cost, in my point of view, especially if you stay at a budget resort or the wilderness cabins. The wilderness cabins are the best place to stay, imo. You can cook your own breakfast and dinner every day, and there is plenty to do at the resort on days you don't feel like going to the park.
