How far do we drop

Not that playoff rankings mean anything (well maybe they still do if we win it and have a chance for a NY6 bowl). But how far do we drop after this debacle? Several teams below us didn’t play due to COVID. A few lost but mostly to higher ranked teams. Probably at least 10 spots?
This loss just had bad optics all around. those who just watched early on saw us getting blown out. This who didn’t see it would see a final score that didn’t look very close, and I didn’t have the stomach to watch any ESPN or BTN tonight but I’m sure they capped off the highlights with our keystone kops lateral-fumble-TD embarrassment.

We won’t drop that far in the CFP rankings. I’ll say #14. Only about 5 teams reasonably close below us won their games — the others lost or didn’t play. We still have 4 top 50 wins, which is more than most. We didn’t look good yesterday but the committee will still give us credit for our overall body of work. AP and Coaches will drop us farther but who cares.

We shouldn't be worried about our ranking. We should start preparing for Illini (assuming Minn is cancelled). Biggest game in a long time! A must win situation!

Actually I kind of wish we hadn’t been ranked so highly because it may have been a big distraction this week. I get that a 5-0 B1G team (all conference wins) should be ranked highly but a team with almost no running game is unlikely to maintain a top 10 ranking. And our D is absolutely top notch but has relied on capitalizing on some pretty fortuitous caroms of tipped passes (though they absolutely get credit for being in position to grab these). Added to that, our O has no home run capability and relies on converting lots of 3rd and 4th downs which is not always sustainable.

It was likely that this was going to come crashing down at some point, I just wish it was against a quality opponent instead.

Well, one area I was hoping see we could capitalize is recruiting since we obviously need some athletes. Maintaining a high ranking and staying in the conversation may have helped us

Recruiting will not be impacted one iota by yesterday's Result if we take care of business in our remaining games. Every goal that was beyond our wildest imaginations at the beginning of this year is still within reach.

We actually went up from our initial AP and Coaches rankings when we were undefeated with no losses.

Interesting positioning by CBS's Jerry Palm - still sees Northwestern in the New Year's Six even with a loss to Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship Game.

Fiesta Bowl projected.

"As such, I now have Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl facing Northwestern. The No. 8 Wildcats took their first loss of the season at Michigan State, 29-20. Northwestern will drop out of contention for a New Year's Six game entirely if it loses to anyone else but Ohio State the rest of the way."

FWIW the Saturday Blitz projects we will now after our one loss be ranked in the CFP at #13 ahead of undefeated BYU (#14), Wisconsin (#15) and upwardly emerging Iowa at #21)

NU stays ahead of undefeated BYU

Pretty impressive. Can’t say we don’t get respect from the committee. I would’ve predicted they would drop us like a hot potato to the 20s after a loss like that.

However, they could still be doing it to help OSU (if they make it to play us in the title game) look better beating a highly ranked opponent.
