OT: RIP Jim Bouton

[NUCat320]

I was too late to understand the furor around Ball Four, but that didn’t stop me from reading it every March for about a decade starting as a high school senior.

I hope he’s pounding some Budweisers somewhere better.

Ball Four was a classic. I loved all of his books.

Bowie Kuhn hated him, which was enough for me.

So did Ted F'ing Williams.

A nice write up from the venerable Charles P. Pierce. I can only assume it was intentional — Pierce’s close nicely mirrors Bouton’s ‘and it ends up gripping you’ conclusion.

Aw, shitfuck.

Jim Bouton had 2 spectacular years with the Yankees in the early 60's. He had an exaggerated overhand delivery-almost awkward but Ball Four broke every unwritten rule of baseball's code of silence and I am sure he was an outcast after the book was published

Jim Bouton and Slim Pickens (Major Kong) were my heroes in high school.

So did Ted F'ing Williams.

So did Pete Rose
