I'm going to be making the trip with my son to show him The Shoe. I'm going as a fan, too, so I'll be sitting in the stands with the peasants instead of the press box.

Anybody have any plans for pre-game? Suggestions for places to go? Avoid? (I'll be with a 15-year-old, after all.)

I will be making the trip. I am staying in Reynoldsburg, wherever that may be. The Thirsty Scholar, a pub near the stadium, has been suggested as a non-toxic experience. (The Thirsty Scholar 2201 Neil Avenue, Columbus)

I plan on getting to Columbus early Saturday, warm up and have lunch at The Thirsty Scholar-never too early to demonstrate responsible drinking habits to a teenager ,Lou

I will probably avoid The Varsity, even a website about OSU, said visiting fans should avoid this traditional OSU party

I will be seated in Section 24A Row 31 Seat 33

Wherever you go, keep your head on a swivel! The last time I attended a game at the Shoe was in the late 2000s. A friend was playing for Wiscy so a buddy & I travelled in to cheer the Badgers on, and we were wise to wear "neutral" Chicago gear as the fans were quite nasty to non-natives. Unless things have changed they'll likely say nasty things to both you and your son if he's wearing purple, no matter how young.

OSU won that game by a couple of touchdowns but the referees still had to be sped out of the stadium under heavy police cover to avoid their angry fans. Good luck Lou!

We have a group of 10 going. Will spend pre game at The Varsity Club (near the stadium, it is a good bar that serves food, not sure if under 18 works there).

My daughter graduated from UT. Pity what has happened to the Horns.
After Northwestern, Ohio State I/we follow the fortunes of Texas football. Since Mack Brown was retired not much happiness with Texas football. Their first mistake was letting JT Barrett sign with tOSU. But, Texas football has plenty of other problems to date. Your daughter graduated from a fine academic institution, UT being one of the elite flagships in our country. A football Saturday at Texas is a great experience.

Lou...Lane avenue is the place to be. Lots of outdoor partying going on with food and entertainment prior to the game. Highly recommend you attend the pre game skull session in St John arena between Lane Ave and the Stadium. The band puts on a great show. Starts about 2 hours prior to kick off. Typically packed... so get there early. Lots of history to see in the hallways. Then make sure you are in your seats for when the band enters the stadium. Along with watching the incomparable Script Ohio at the half, the entrance is a big part of the Buckeye game day experience. And if you would enjoy a high quality meal after the game, I would be happy to host you and your son. Just e-mail me and we'll make the arrangements. I'll be in Columbus with my wife and daughter. Wish I could join you all. My first and only visit to the Shoe was in November 1971. Yes, I was part of the tiny throng of purple people who saw the Cats beat Woody Hayes and Co. on a glorious fall day. Drove from Evanston down to Columbus that weekend. Nowadays, living in the place I love, Montana (native), it's way too far to drive and the air fares from here to there are astronomical. So, I'll have to settle for listening on WGN while making a family matters road trip Saturday.

Hey Lou, just saw this. I started another thread with some places I like hitting. If you are looking for something other than food/drink, I may be able to help on that front as well.

I am gong with 6 family members and staying in a hotel near the airport. The airport suggest hiring the Orange Cab Company to drive us too and back from the game. I am also looking at driving and parking in one of the Union parking garages a couple of hours before the game. Any thoughts on those options?

How about Uber? One advantage is you might well have a former OSU athlete picking you up!

I have heard Uber has outrageous fees for large scale events.
Uber and Lyft are both excellent.. I used Uber several times in Tampa for the bowl game, and the prices were reasonable. Plus, they will give you the approximate cost before they pick you up. If you don't like it, don't take it.

Hey doc -

Just checking in to see if the Thirsty Scholar treated you well. I hope you and your fellow 'cat fans had a good visit. Your Wildcats turned in a helluva game. Best of luck on the rest of the season.
