Parking Question from a visiting Husker

Hey guys, my family and I are coming to Evanston for the game this weekend. In the past, my father who posted under the name HuskerPreacher in case any of you remember him, came to you guys for gameday information and you guys were always incredibly helpful. He passed away in December 2014 from pancreatic cancer, and the Nebraska-Northwestern game that year was the last game he went to, so Evanston always has a special place in my heart.

Sorry for the backstory, but to the point, my sister who is organizing everything wanted me to find out about gameday parking. We are aware of the free lots and shuttles, but we will have a relatively large group (my dad's family from Omaha is coming in for the game) so if we can avoid shuttles we'd like to. Paying for spots isn't an issue if we can avoid needing to use the shuttle, but we'll need 4 spots. I know my dad was able to find spots in years past, but I know we only needed one spot back then. If you guys know of anyone to get ahold of or somewhere online to look, that'd be awesome. Thanks in advance, and looking forward to coming back to Evanston!

Sorry to hear of your fathers passing and it's been reported that $600 will get you a spot in the close in lots. Realistically, there are a couple of privately owned lots near the stadium. One is just off of Central Ave but doesn't allow liquor and there are a couple on Green Bay Rd., which is about a 4 block walk from Ryan Field.

A lot of the parking for football has changed with many folks in different lots than before. Trying to purchase 4 spots in same stadium lot will be difficult. You are competing with a lot of other Husker fans. It's the reality when big visiting football crowds come to NU(the purple one). I think the lots on Green Bay are your best option but you will need to secure early. Only 15 minute walk to stadium but you will see mostly fans in red coming from that direction so again get there early.

School parking lot on Green Bay between Lincoln and Central. Lincoln is one street south of Central and about a 5 block walk. Agree with the others to get there early since the visitors who travel in large groups will be out in force. .Sorry about your father but glad he enjoyed his trip(s) to Evanston.

Let me give you an honest piece of advice.

It is by all accounts going to be a beautiful evening on Saturday.

You've come all this way.

Do NOT deny yourself a nice walk through some absolutely lovely neighborhoods.

If you have a tailgate to go to, free street park 5-6-7 blocks from the stadium and enjoy a great walk to the stadium. You'll love it. So you really don't need 4 spots. You need one. The other 3 get to take a lovely walk and will really like it. What you should really do is go over to Gilson Park and check out the dunes on the lake and then walk from there. A great walk.

Not planning on doing much tailgating, unfortunately. I'm actually from LaSalle County here in Illinois, so not too far of a drive for me and my immediate family, but my dad's family is from out west in God's Country . I think we do plan on getting into town early, but I'll be pushing it since I'm on midnights and will be trying to get at least a little sleep before driving into town. Hoping to allow plenty of time for Chicagoland driving (I live in a town of 700, so more used to dealing with tractors than traffic, haha).

This my seem blasphemous, but Lincoln, Nebraska has parks, gardens and neighborhoods that are nicer than anything in Evanston. It's a very nice town. Visitors who are familiar with Lincoln will not be blown away by Evanston neighborhoods in the sense that they're prettier than neighborhoods in Lincoln.

All Husker fans are required to take the shuttle bus from Midway airport. It departs Midway about 15 minutes before game time

Nebraskans are advised to arrive with a full tank of gas, so as not to have to pay big city prices. And wear a money belt, for all those fast-talking city slickers.

I'd recommend the Linden L (train) parking lot, about four easy blocks north of the stadium. I think it's $4 per car. Normally it's no problem getting spots, although the Cubs play that day and there will be a lot of baseball fans parking there and taking the L to the game.

That's is a good idea. Looks like the game is far from a sellout, as NU is still advertising that plenty of seats available on it's radio ads. Maybe the UNL folks aren't traveling as predicted or some NU fans have already given up on the season.

I was always planning to go to this game. Northwestern grad, grew up in Nebraska. I went on line first thing to order tickets and they were selling for $135 each. I said screw them, and didn't order. Wonder if NU's scheme to soak the visiting Cornhusker fans backfired on them?

Very possibly. StubHub resale prices are already really reasonable, and by tomorrow morning, I am betting you can get a good seat to this game for under face value.
