Tough outcome, Wildcats...

I won't rehash the outcome. It was obvious that your passing offense - or lack-there-of - was the difference in this one.

Question: were you a little surprised at the lack of fan representation in Tampa? Traditionally, do Wildcat fans travel well? Was there not a lot of buzz among the fan base?

I'm not trolling, I'm just curious (and a little shocked) about the lack of purple in the stands.

I saw a ton of orange on TV, and I think it probably swallowed up the NU representation visually. We usually show 10,000 -12,000 at bowl games, which reflects a small alumni base (9000 undergrad population) and travel demands for a group that is concentrated in the upper Midwest.

People need to understand that NU is not a public university, not a state school. It tries to be “Chicago’s BigTen Team”, but the truth is there are probably more grads from most OTHER BigTen schools living in the Chicago area than there are NU alums. So, if you didn’t go there, or live nearby in the north suburbs of Chicago around Evanston (and didn’t go to another BigTen school), chances are you are not a Wildcat fan. Notre Dame is the exception in that regard, having a great football tradition and Irish Catholics around the world in their hip pocket wherever they play.

And NU students tend come from all over the country (and world), moreso than is true of so-called state schools, and don’t usually feel “regionally attached” to Illinois after graduation. So, attendance is an issue in Evanston, not just at bowl games. In fact, if you consider that NU has 10,000+ attending bowl games (more than it’s undergrad enrollment) that puts a different spin on it.

It seemed to me like we didn't travel as well to this game as we did to the Outback in 2010 or the Gator in 2012. I don't know why, though.

Funny: Musberger said that Rose Bowl crowd is "overwhelmingly Iowa". That's for a game played in Stanford's own state!

They apparently don't believe in being a fan of a team unless they 'attended that school'. It's not like in the South, where we generally follow the team that our families traditionally supported. I tried to explain it to a fan on here, that for us we are loyal to a team from childhood.

So I'm guessing they don't allow kids to be fans, and spouses, etc. You know it has to cut down on their fan support.

Ok. I'll be honest and answer your question. The smart fans, and there are plenty of them, have known all along that this is half a team and that it has basically stolen a winning record with a combination of luck, smoke, mirrors and more luck. And they weren't about to blow a lot of money to travel to Florida to watch this suck *** offense perform like a bunch of grade school girls touching a football for the first time in a mandatory gym class football rotation. That's your answer: most of us are too smart to walk down dark alleys at 3 am in the ghetto, to drink drano or to pay more than the mandatory $38 per game we pay for season tickets are to watch this particular team under this particular staff get their *** kicked again. Those who attended are either allergic to their money or brainwashed. Truth.

We actually traveled well considering we have 8000 undergrads and we're not a state or a regional school. I would guess we had 15k there and that's pretty good for us.

We could have stolen every game with this defense but everything has to go right like it did vs Stanford and Wisky. It's a very, very tough way to win with no margin for error.

I guess I don't feel as you do that are that bad. Jackson has 2 years left and Thorson 4. Our lesser receivers are leaving and the new crop redshirted for the most part. We're terrible on offense but it may be youth or it may coaching or it may be both.

NU is also located in a very heavy pro sports town. Why be an NU fan when you can be a bears, Blackhawks, Bulls fan etc. it's not a northern thing, it's a pro vs college thing. I know plenty of folks from the middle of nowhere Michigan, Ohio, Iowa etc that are bud college football fans the didn't go to UM, OSU, Iowa etc.

We showed very well but UT might have brought 45-50k. It was very, very impressive.

"Allow?" How do you prevent someone from becoming a fan? Fandom is a choice, though my South African friend who married a fine American lady seems to think that living in Chicago means you must root for the Bears.

Chicago is very much a pro sports town. And with the relative success of the Bulls and Hawks, fans have gravitated to these franchises when the Bears have disappointed. And with high schools, it's mostly about basketball. So college football is not top of mind here, though there is plenty of interest.

If this sounds crazy, consider that New York cares less about college football than professional soccer, by some measures.

My advice to you is to allow non-alumni to be fans, then. Since you're so hard up for supporters. It would be a good start to stop acting like it's some kind of negative thing for someone to support the program of a school that they haven't had a chance to attend yet.

For starters, you run your elitist c0***ucker about folks who want to be fans, but never attended. It turns people off.

I wouldn't be a fan of NW either, even if I lived next door to the school. Judging by the behavior of folks around here, at least.

Sorry you have been so offended by NU fans. Most of them are really good people, IMO. Don't let a few cretins spoil the big picture. NU people are generally very cool, in my experiences.

It would be great to have more supporters. Why is it negative to support a school if you haven't gone there? Who said that?

I'm sorry to hear that.

Do you feel the Vol fans have behaved well here? Should we adopt you as our new SEC team to root for? I'd like to do that but you guys have not been decent. I understand the recent inferiority complex because UF and Bama have overshadowed you, but I've said it over and over again: act like you've been at the top before which you have been! Act like your daddy's Vol fans. This is really bad for Vol nation.

You really have some class belittling the many fans who traveled to the game. They fell badly enough about the outcome of the game already without people such as you calling them "allergic to their money or brainwashed" They can choose to spend their money to support their beloved Wildcats without hearing this garbage from you. Seems like every post from you lately is a new low.

Mods, my apologies in advance for responding to Stupor's post, since it will probably be deleted anyway...

The foundational assumption of your argument is wrong. It is beyond wrong. It is fallacious. A school or fanbase cannot disallow others from being fans. Do you really think that is the issue?

Well Stupor is a STH so he is brainwashed too. He just antagonizes for fun and you have to let it go. He is a funny guy with good sports knowledge. He uses it for evil sometimes.

Why is he saying that? I guess some NU fans must have made fun of Tennessee fans who have no connection to the school, a la the usual state school critique from the Dark Ages NU fans. We just have a small school and we're in a north burb of a major US metro area with plenty of things to do. It's pretty stupid of us--well, not us exactly but snotty NU fans--to claim Tenn fans are disingenuous or unworthy of their fandom if they don't have a connection. They live in that state and it's the state school. That is the connection and it's legitimate.

I root for the state school back home and there's nothing wrong with it, either. Unless its interests don't align with my baby, the glorious purple n white.

Did not see anything funny in that post. If you and others did, my apologies. And I can assure you, there is nothing to let go, he doesn't bother me in the least. But other fanbases take his posts as an excuse to troll here (his ridiculous post about theft from today was front and center on one of the main Tennessee message boards today), and use his posts to paint all of us here with the same brush.

Trust me, this poster represents a very SMALL minority of the fan base. I thought your defense today was pretty darn good until fatigue started to set in, you all just need more play makers on offense to get to the next step. Good luck to you guys next year, no need to hang your heads low after today.

I did not say his post is funny. I'm saying that in real life he is a funny guy. He sorts of uses this as an outlet for his anger and frustration like a lot of people do. Knowing this about him, I just ignore his posts when they're clearly playing devil's advocate or intentionally antagonistic.

I don't understand your point. I had season tickets for NU for several years and have attended probably 30-40 games. I did not attend NU and now that I think about it I don't even know anyone who attended NU. Whoever told you this nonsense about not being allowed to be a fan if you didn't attend a school really pulled one off on you - I'm shocked you would believe that.

Number of undergraduates at NU - 8000.

Number of undergraduates at UT 22,000.

When you have three times the kids in school (and also many generations of UT attendance heritage and fandom in many families), is it any surprise you will outdraw a much smaller private school?

I came on this board wanting to talk about football. What I found was a bunch of elitist fools wanting to establish the validity of their bigotries. The smartest people can have the biggest blind spots. I got shouted down and my intellect questioned simply for trying to give you a wake-up slap. I'm more than happy to leave and allow you to continue to wallow in your own misplaced sense of superiority.
