Just wanted to stop by and wish you guys, your team, and staff, good luck on your bowl game against the Vols. Time to put away conference rivalries and begin conference loyalties. Pulling for you to beat Tennessee and give a black eye to the SEC. Go Cats! Beat the Vols!

Thanks Iowa fan, personally I am rooting for Iowa in the Rose Bowl, I know you can beat those Cardinal Trees. That was a crushing loss vs Michigan State, I was proud and impressed with the effort your team put forth. Of course, I am rooting for a huge B1G showing in the bowls.

So, from a fan perspective are Tennessee fans as obnoxious as they seem on this board?

Go Cats !

Good luck in the Rose Bowl. Apparently Iowa learned so much from playing superior TN in their bowl last year that it helped them to be undefeated and just miss the CFP. Kick the crap out of the Cardinals (sic). NU did

Wow--I've got to take a day off more often. A Hawkeye fan stops by to wish us luck 15 minutes ago and immediately 2 Volfans flame him.

Anyway, Modeba 2004 : Thanks for the good wishes and, likewise, all the best for your bowl game. And PS loved to see the outdoor wrestling match at Kinnick with Oklahoma State. Great idea.

Rooting for your conference in bowls makes no sense.

Unless your conference is complete trash they will enough games where it doesnt tarnish the conference's reputation.

As a Tennessee fan I hope Bama, Florida, and Georgia get the hell beat out of them. Those teams winning does nothing to help Tennessee.

OP....serious question....what happened between bowl game with UT last year and this season. TN looked great and you guys looked awful in Taxslayer. Really rooted for you against MSU. The team last year in bowl and your team this year looked totally different. Congrats on a great season so far.

Changed the starting QB. Bethard made all the difference in the world for that team.

Ha... Wish my fellow Vol fans would quit biting hook, line, and sinker on these awful troll attempts. :)

These are basically northern Vandy fans. Mired in student debt, scarce in number, burdened with an oversized sense of professional superiority because of a diploma they hang on their wall, and forced to go the route of trailer park comments because there is nothing football related they can stand on with a straight face. Let all 8 of them have their fun.

Northwestern is good. Vegas thinks we're better. We'll find out who's right.

Go Vols.

Wasn't you taking a shot at the other guy for saying we don't cheer for the SEC? If not then I apologize, just the way it came off.
. Ok. First off, I will refrain from correcting your grammar, or lack there of. Second, yes I was pointing out that by the 'other guy ' admitting he did not root for other SEC teams in bowls made me realize what makes your fans base tick. Get it ? Another piece of the puzzle falls into place. That is not a 'shot' exactly, just an observation. Go Cats !

Was he trying to throw a forward pass on a kick return??? Why can't Iowa make bizarre, bonehead plays like that when they play us?!?

Actually that is different from the Auburn and Miss St fans who seem to root for the SEC teams in bowls. I'm a bit surprised.

I think that has been a bit of a change lately. I'd like to see Iowa been Stanford easily. Rooting for Wisconsin over USC too. MSU over Alabama would be sweet.

It makes zero sense to cheer for conference rivals. It's all about recruiting. I'm not a SEC fan, I'm a Tennessee fan. I hope GA,Bama and Florida all get the crap kicked out of them.

Iowa changes this season involved more than just a new QB. While Beathard was a big part of Iowa's resurgence, the running back position was actually manned by 4 guys who had more speed/wiggle than the fullback (Weisman) who started at tailback for Iowa the prior two years. At other positions across the board (linebackers and secondary on D and o-line and tight end) players matured and simply played much better than prior year. Cornerback Desmond King had a special year with 8 interceptions and he became the main punt returner (#2 in return yards in B10). Also, on special teams, the punting (which was awful the year before) became at least serviceable and place kicker more accurate than previous year. Lastly, in addition to the tangible improvements noted above, Ferentz became more of a risk-taker (going for it on 4th downs, fake punts, etc) and the team just had a cohesiveness and "never say die" nasty attitude. Essentially, they were embarrased at how the end of regular season & bowl game played out. Therefore, "thanks" to a 2nd half collapse against Nebraska and their bone-headed AD subsequently making a comment to the effect that Nebraska didn't want to become "another Iowa" and the cocky Vols the Hawkeyes simply said "enough is enough" and punched teams in the mouth this season.

I didn't see this game last year. WTH was he thinking? Man, talk about making a bad situation worse...

I feel bad for that official behind him. I doubt that's a situation they covered in ref training school... "make sure a kick returner keeps his feet in bounds before inexplicably throwing/fumbling the ball to the other team..."

On the play it took the refs like 10 min to announce what the penalty was. I seriously think they had to get the rule book out.

Meh, it takes all kinds. I understand your perspective and respect it. At the same time, there are good arguments for conference loyalty (after team loyalty, of course).

First, logically -- a rising tide lifts all boats. If folks think my conference (whatever conference that might be) is strong, folks will think better of my team as part of that body of institutions. That is just as true if my team is the conference champion as it is if we're the cellar dwellers. It works academically, as well as athletically and in many other ways. So I should want my conference to be well thought of.

And second, culturally -- there is a rich tradition of football in the SEC (and in the B10 too, of course). I personally am very pleased to be surrounded by the traditions of Ole Miss and the Grove, the Georgia Bulldogs of Vince Dooley and Hershel Walker days, Alabama and Bear Bryant, the Third Saturday in October, the Iron Bowl, the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, and on and on. I love being part of that, just as I'm sure many B10 fans love being part of the whole Hayes-Schembechler, Cheesehead, key-shaking, I-dotting mural that is B10 football.

So it takes all kinds of perspectives, and--on this subject--none are wrong. I personally was a little bit touched to see an Iowa fan come across and wish the NU fans well. It was a classy move, just the kind of sportsmanship I'd expect from the Hawkeyes having gotten to know them a bit last winter.

If Tennessee or any other team is taking care of business on the field it doesn't matter about the rise and fall of the conference.

The state of Tennessee most years is not a hot bed for D1 talent. Tennessee has to recruit their rivals states in order to compete in the SEC. The worse our rivals do and the better Tennessee plays helps Tennessee.

Penalty? For what, unsurpassed idiocy?

My theory is the guy thought he was on punt coverage. Maybe too much partying the night before.

Btw, did anyone see the play the Niners guy made vs. the Bears? He caught a punt on the fly over the end zone after leaping, Curly Nealed the ball behind the back and onto the playing field, where a Bears player inexplicably tried to pick it up. This touched off a greased pigskin routine where five Niners tried to dive on it, successively squirting it back through and out of the end zone. Crazy, crazy play.

Your point is well taken, Biscuit, and not entirely without merit. However, JP describes a common and understandable sentiment as well. Neither of you are wrong; it's just a matter of personal perspective. You both sound like great fans and you have differing points of view . . . and isn't that what fandom is all about?

You are absolutely correct. If you don't have an education and you aren't successful in life, at least you have a ****** football team to follow. It's good to hear you have something to be proud of.

Well, our fan bases used to simply loathe each other. Then, NU started to win games against them and they developed a modicum of respect for our program. Losing to them the past two seasons has seemingly softened relations and the back and forth winning has, IMO, established mutual respect between us. Actually, it's not as surprising to see that kind of behavior occur now.

You fellers sure do write lovely sentences - excellent grammar - we call that 'Harbracing the language' after some lady that wrote a book on it.

We do have an opening for a proof reading editor on the old Vol Board here.
