Nothing To Cheer About

listening to westwood 1 radio broadcast of the bengal game last night, Kevin Harlon asked Boomer why the stadium was so quiet and plentyof empty seats for a 9-0 nfl team.
Boomer's response was "There is nothing to cheer about...well, maybe the defense..."

The same is true for our team. With a very very boring offense we drew 30,004 paid attendance but the real attendance may have only been 25,000 against purdue.

I admit the game was very very boring.
Thankfully we are winning because otherwise thebottom would have fell out, leaving only fans like us.

(IF true), that's a damn shame. Defense is a big part of football, IMO the most important part, and I have been like a starved wretch waiting for us to have a good defense. Why is a touchdown pass more exciting than a QB sack with the game on the line? Or an interception? I'm as frustrated with the offense as anyone, but I'd much rather have "boring" winning team than to have the 2010 version giving up 70 points to Wisc. Anyone think that's going to happen this week?

People that need scoring to be "interested" in the game are like the people that hate 1-0 soccer matches. They don't understand the game.

Pray the offense does not get better, because then the only thing left to complain about would be winning a lot.

i agree. neither Boomer or myself are talking about those of us who are enjoying this great season, but the average sports fan isnt much to bother at defensive struggles. Our society is conditioned on action and video games that blow everything up. even if we lost our last 3, this still has been a great coaching job and good season but we have to embrace that we simply are not a very popular team to watch.

Well, when there's nothing to cheer about in an 8-2 season, I'll quit watching sports. After years of following the Cubs, Bears, pre-Rocky Wirtz Blackhawks, NU football, and my mediocre in sports high school and undergraduate college alma maters, I never find it boring to win. At the Penn State game, I certainly didn't find Oliver's TD pass, Vault's kick return, Mitchell's winning FG and the overall strong defensive play boring. But then again, I don't think they needed to shorten the college basketball shooting clock, so what do I know?

I don't know. Although the stadium wasn't full, it was certainly more than half full (I would estimate closer to 2/3) by end if first quarter.

There's a difference between good defense and poorly executed offense.

If true, then baseball, soccer, and hockey are doomed. All three have limited action (in terms of scoring) compared against football, basketball, or rugby. Different types of fans for different types of sports.

I do not like Arena Football or even Canadian Football due to the lack of defense. I love watching a great defense flying to the ball and making an otherwise good offense look so bad that the media has to come up with nonsense about when they ate breakfast that morning impacting their ability to play.

Basebal and hockey ARE doomed in the US. Hockey is a niche sport. Baseball interest is declining such that during the last playoffs I couldn't even find the games on TV.

Soccer will never be big in the US. But elsewhere it is the sport of choice, more for historical reasons than because of the intrinsic action of the game. I don't worry about he future of soccer, it is a cultural phenomenon which will endure forever.

Turk..........Bengals Game Comments:

I was in attendance at "OUR WHO DEY'S" game at Paul Brown last night and I submit the following:
The average fan started tailgating at 2:00--3:00 p.m., this created the need for frequent trips to the urinals.
This in turn led to many temporary empty seats, and by 11:00 p.m., we were all sick of "Tyler's" drops.
The Houston defense just flat shut the Bengal crowd down with an outstanding performance.
I agree the game appeared to be flat, however it was very unusual for the Bengal offense to be sub-par
for all four quarters........they are a VERY TALENTED WELL COACHED FOOTBALL TEAM.

Doubt hockey is doomed, certainly not in Chicago where they were selling out the stadium when was rarely televised. It is faster moving than soccer and has much more scoring and scoring opportunities.

I don't have to do anything. And I'm pretty sure your insistence makes it less likely that I would do anything.

The 73M that attended MLB games last season may not agree that baseball is doomed!

Tyler breaks down defenses. Bottom line. He is a big athlete guy. But he killed 3 drives with unexpected drops. Not sure what happened but his confidence level was 0 last night. Hopefully, he bounces back.

Turk has a point though in that how can we expect for national pundits and press to take the Cat's seriously when their fans don't even think enough of them to show up to the games! The attendance for the games is pathetic for an 8 and 2 team.

I don't blame you -- many MLB playoff games were on that niche channel called TBS that's only in more homes than ESPN.

I think our fans are showing up. We just don't have a big fan base. I have plenty of friends who are Secondary Cat fans, in the sense that they live in Chicago and watch almost all of the games on TV, much like a bulls fan who may never go to the game but watch on TV, and some of them go to our games when OSU or Michigan or some other big name team comes in. But, due to a very poor home schedule of Purdue, Minny, a weakened PSU team, ball state, EIU, there is little reason for our 'secondary fan base' to show up. I did think that the Iowa game attendance of 44,000 was decent but if we beat Michigan we could have sold out for sure.

I don't agree with the premise. Issue was that everyone knew Purdue is bad this year. This casual fans had little interest. At the game itself the anxiety level of the true fans sucked out all enthusiasm much of the game as everyone fretted we were blowing it. in this way the emotions and psychology of Wildcat fandom are pretty similar to most I have contact with. We are just smaller by nature.

It may take a bit of time to gain the fans back. After two 5-7 seasons, and a line-up of games this year that really didn't have any of the featured B1G teams, it is tough to win them over with defensive football, especially when you lose the big games.

Well aware of that. Also aware that average per game attendance is less than half the average NFL game. However, my point is 73,000,000 tickets were sold. Hardly seems doomed as stated.

I don't think it's doomed either. It's definitely got its hardcore fans. I do think general interest has declined...

FS1 is still carried in close to 90 million homes (vs. 97 for ESPN, 100 for TBS), though I admit many people don't actually know they have it.
