The media joked in interviews the irony of Canzeri being the healthest player right now.
He appears to be carrying the load well.

The evangelical Christian is an extremely team first guy. His attitude has carried over the team this season. Something that was absent last season.

The fact Iowa has one #1 QB has had a positive impact, as well.

I think early on, NW comes out fired up and gets out to a quick lead. Iowa is able to stay in the game with a special teams/defensive TD (Desmond King has been so close to taking a punt back for six on multiple occasions, I think he finally gets one this week). In the 2nd half they are able to assert their dominance on the LOS on both sides and are able to grind out a couple scoring drives with Canzeri. Hawks win 20-13.

I think Canzeri is our best back, the issue with him has always been health. Losing Daniels hurts because we've been hesitant to give our other backups any carries. The next two RBs had a few snaps against Illinois, but we didn't trust them with a carry.

Both teams have major injury concerns, so I consider them a wash. May the best team win.

What does the current Northestern injury report look like?
We're very healthy.

Matthew Harris starting CB out
Kyle Queiro Back up safety out
Jayme Taylor #3-4 superback out (never played this year)
Tommy Vitale #4-5 superback/burried on depth chart linebacker out
Adam DePietro #6-7 olineman doubtful
Flynn Nagel #6 WR Questionable

Iowa @ Northwestern ... pick'em

Both teams have a good history, in this un-rivalry.
  • Northwestern has won six of the last ten
  • Iowa has won three of the last four
Kirk Ferentz has won two games in Evanston, 2-4 overall, since 1999
  • 2007, with Jake Christensen at QB, 28-17
  • 2001, with Kyle McCann at QB, 59-17
Both teams are well coached. Both teams have good defenses, which typically are a pre-requisite for success under their respective staffs.

Iowa averages 28 points in Evanston, but gives up 22 points, with a 2-4 record, so in the past, close games have favored the home team. The Home Team has won 4 straight in the series.

peace

Hey there Cats.......I, like a lot of Hawk fans have great concern about this game. Even if we were completely healthy, this game would scare me to death. My question for you folks centers around your passing game. Who is the go to receiver for you? Do you use the TE much? And, are there a lot of plays with J. Jackson coming out of the backfield in the passing game?

Thanks and here's to a GREAT game!!!

Vitale, the SB (like a TE in NU's offense)
JJ catches passes split wide more than coming out of the backfield.

I'm just nervous that the team has totally lost it after being demolished by Michigan, when in fact it is probably just me that has totally lost it. Can't wait for the game to start.

Beating Iowa should be our birthright. Iowans use our airport, depend on our universites, and generally rely on Chicago for commerce, culture, and a convenient means to visit a metropolis. Iowa farmers use machines made in Illinois. Iowans do not want to go to New York or LA. They want everything to be Midwestern. Des Moines is a Chicago satellite. They are citizens of the United States of the Middle West. Chicago is the national capital. We are Chicago's Big Ten Team. Ergo, we win.

Fun fact, Iowa has only beat a winning Northwestern football team (better than .500 at season's end) once in the past fifty years.

Hard to type while laughing so hard. There are exponentially more Illinois residents in Iowa universities than the reverse. John Deere has more manufacturing capacity in Iowa than in Illinois, and is about to vacate your pathetic state, like so many others have, just to avoid the dumpster fire that the fiscal black hole that Chicago has created. Yes, I love to visit Chicago for a weekend, but the best part is heading back into corn fields filled with honest people at the end of the trip. Makes me appreciate what I have.

And no matter what the outcome this Saturday, Northwestern has a birthright to beat absolutely nobody.

I knew Iowa was in trouble last week when they were playing a real freshman at tackle. That first series, Illinois blew him up 2-3 times. He settled down and played "ok" the rest of the way. Injuries are part of the game, especially at this time of the year. Hayden used to talk about all his "battered and beaten young men".......With Kirk (New Kirk or Old Kirk) it has always been, "Next man in."
I know one thing....Iowa will play tough and not back way from any challenge Saturday. This Iowa team has "an attitude" about them that they need to be successful. Perhaps not the most skilled but tough minded. Northwestern and (at) Indiana always worry me as a FB fan......playing at Nebraska will be concerning too.....But we are 6-0 at present.

IF the Iowa defense can keep Iowa in this game it is going to be very close. Iowa offense is going to be give Canzeri the ball. I doubt Iowa has time to throw the ball, which means if you shut down the run, you win. Iowa 17-14

Yes I am sure people are really clamoring to live in Chicago these days and catch a case of the dead.

Iowa is a nice state. I wouldn't mind living in NE Iowa where, believe it or not, there is excellent native trout fishing (believe it or not) in spring-fed streams coming off the bluffs. People are really friendly, too. Horrible state for bicycling aside from RAGBRAI. No paved shoulders, though there are some nice trails around Des Moines. Oh, and Iowa is NOT flat.

Never driven across Nebraska on I-80?.......and that is hilly compared to western Kansas. ;)

He was referring to south Florida. I've driven I-80 across Kansas and I-70 across Kansas many times and rode a bicycle across Nebraska twice along US 30 eastbound and US 34 westbound. Those roads are flat on the plains where there is no erosion, e.g., Hastings. South Florida is even flatter.

To kind of give you an idea how flat it is...

I doubt it. Football usually doesn't work that way. In this series, a 48-7 score is atypical. It happens when one team executes extraordinarily well while another lays an egg. Another example of this in the series is the 2006 game. Last year, Iowa played almost perfect football and we just couldn't get rolling. Though disgusted with the course of the game, I would find myself rewinding and admiring the almost perfect blocking Iowa had on many of their big plays. Iowa had a great game! The excellent play didn't last long, though, did it? Losses to UW (who we beat), Minnesota (you guys were blown out whereas we lose a tie game on a late KO return), Maryland, and Iowa State happened. Then you guys topped off the season with the excellent performance against Tennessee. The point being team execution can vary considerably from week to week, even at Iowa.

I expect a close game, even if your injured players were healthy. I think Beathard vs Thorson and the Iowa DL vs NU OL will be the key match-ups/comparisons in this game. Let's hope the game is injury free.

As it turned out glade, Iowa won 2-0. This Iowa team plays hard. This Iowa team plays "next man in" philosophically. The Iowa team is really beat up at the moment. Really concerned with the 4th RB limping off the field late. It appears Iowa will have 1 healthy RB, one coming off injury and two RBs who will probably miss a game or two. Hopefully, the OL injuries at tackle will get healthy this next (off) week. Iowa's halfway through the season now......and no one thought they'd be 7-0.

Gary Barnett, the coach of Northwestern's 1995 team that went to the Rose Bowl, will be the Wildcats' honorary captain Saturday for the homecoming game against Iowa. Barnett will address the team on Friday. NU's tradition of redlettering Ioa and beating their asses regularly started under Barnett. Barnett always hated the Hawkeyes more than anyone.

We will be wearing the Purple and the Black.

We will be extremely pissed off after the embarrassing Michigan debacle.

We are still the same team that shut down top 25 teams in Stanford and Duke.

We have some injuries, but Ioa is even more injured.

It is Ioa and they are our *****.
What's that about your *****? LOL you got your *** kicked. Don't quit your day job because you such at predictions. Hilarious post.
