Not according to my buddy at Excelon. Can Texas tap power from the national grid?
Tell him to come on here and it explain it t us like we are 5.Not according to my buddy at Excelon.
Power wires are down, they are rapidly restoring power to the residentsTell him to come on here and it explain it t us like we are 5.
I glazed over at dekatherms.Tell him to come on here and it explain it t us like we are 5.
Apparently not. Because they are 'independent', they don't have to pay some tax/fee to be part of the national grid. This is by their choosing. Can Texas tap power from the national grid?
I understand, but could they not tap into it now in this emergency? Or is the grid not set up this way.Apparently not. Because they are 'independent', they don't have to pay some tax/fee to be part of the national grid. This is by their choosing.
I don't know, but I'm curious as hell to find out.I understand, but could they not tap into it now in this emergency? Or is the grid not set up this way.
My brother in Houston said 'nope'. Apparent that TX thought this was never going to happen. Mistake.I understand, but could they not tap into it now in this emergency? Or is the grid not set up this way.
Texas never thought wind turbines would get so cold that they would freeze up? Who predicted that - anyone? My brother in Houston said 'nope'. Apparent that TX thought this was never going to happen. Mistake.
We've got a 200 unit wind farm 30 miles north of me that spin away 12 months of the year and I live in upstate NY.Texas never thought wind turbines would get so cold that they would freeze up? Who predicted that - anyone?
Alaska has wind turbines that don't freeze up. Most of the country does. And natural gas infrastructure. El Paso apparently predicted it and weatherized their equipment years ago. Texas can get in to the blame game when they want, that wasn't the point of this thread. Legit wanna know if the rest of us could help them out until their grid thawed out.Texas never thought wind turbines would get so cold that they would freeze up? Who predicted that - anyone?
Hard pass. I'm a geek, not a nerd. You should have studied Engineering.
I dropped Accounting.

They can but it is not as easy as it is for most states continuously on the grid.I understand, but could they not tap into it now in this emergency? Or is the grid not set up this way.
There would be a surge if the two grids are not at the same capacity. So it becomes an issue.Yes, there is a physical link between the Texas grid and the national grid. I have no idea what the logistical or legal parameters are for closing that breaker and connecting the two.
Near Lake Erie, right? No wonder that you're so miserable. It snows there about six months a year. We've got a 200 unit wind farm 30 miles north of me that spin away 12 months of the year and I live in upstate NY.
The dingbats in Michigan don't seem to think so, but once they stop the trains and barges full of coal from moving this way, they'll regret it.Coal is king
Lake Ontario. Actually, I love snow and cross country ski 3-4 days a week. Going ice fish this weekend.Near Lake Erie, right? No wonder that you're so miserable. It snows there about six months a year.
They also have to deice them on the regular, no? Using helicopter? We've got a 200 unit wind farm 30 miles north of me that spin away 12 months of the year and I live in upstate NY.
No idea. They also have to deice them on the regular, no? Using helicopter?
I don’t either. Electricity scares me. It’s working are as foreign to me as a woman’s clitoris. No idea.
How many animals are killed every year from massive ice chards spewn from these? Wind energy is a damn joke. We've got a 200 unit wind farm 30 miles north of me that spin away 12 months of the year and I live in upstate NY.
Not enough. How many animals are killed every year from massive ice chards spewn from these?
My parents owned a vacation house in Kendall right on Lake Ontario in the 1990s. They never saw the Sun in the handful of years that they owned the house, and some imbecile installed a heat pump there. Nothing more fun than waking up at 4:00 a.m. to clear a foot of snow off of the heat pump.Lake Ontario. Actually, I love snow and cross country ski 3-4 days a week. Going ice fish this weekend.
Funny thing, if you talk to a lot of accountants, where accounting wasn't their first degree choice, more often than not you'll find they started out in engineering. Me, I'm pure accountant. Started it my sophomore year of high school and carried it through to college. You should have studied Engineering.
I dropped Accounting.

Way more than the reward. The power provided by a windmill is laughably low.Not enough.
Or have some kind of back-up. It seems odd to not have some kind of a plan.Texas never thought wind turbines would get so cold that they would freeze up? Who predicted that - anyone?
At least you got the balls to say what many are thinkingI don’t either. Electricity scares me. It’s working are as foreign to me as a woman’s clitoris.
They have a deicing agent built onto the windmill. The design also make it more likely ice is shed by the windmill turning. They also have to deice them on the regular, no? Using helicopter?
Ok? I doubt Texas is relying on it then.Way more than the reward. The power provided by a windmill is laughably low.
Excellent read.Interesting analysis piece on the Texas situation from a transmission and distribution Trade publication......which I received from my best buddy (who's a career high-voltage guy working with utilities).
