MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University football coach Neal Brown has announced that Andrew Jackson will join the Mountaineer coaching staff as an assistant coach on the defensive side. Brown will announce staff assignments at a later time.

"I would like to welcome Andrew to the Mountaineer Football family," Brown said. "He comes highly recommended and brings good defensive experience with him. He already has recruiting experience in areas within our footprint and has a track record for being an outstanding teacher."

Jackson comes to Morgantown after serving as the defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator for defense at Old Dominion for the past year.

"Coach Brown is building a strong, family-oriented program at West Virginia, and I am excited to become a part of its upward climb," Jackson said. "The program has a rich tradition and history and the fan base is very passionate. I have a lot of respect for the people in this state, and I am excited to work with the players and coaches. I can't wait to get started."

Jackson joined the Old Dominion staff after spending the 2019 season at James Madison as the defensive tackles coach. While at JMU, the Dukes led the FCS in total defense and was third in scoring defense. Defensive tackle Mike Greene led the Colonial Athletic Association in sacks by an interior lineman and earned all-conference honors.

Jackson was the defensive quality control coach at Mississippi State in 2018, where he helped the Bulldogs to an 8-5 record and berth in the Outback Bowl. MSU ranked in the top 10 nationally in eight defensive categories, including a No. 1 national ranking in total defense (263.1). Jeffery Simmons and Montez Sweat earned All-Southeastern Conference honors.

In 2017, Jackson coached the defensive line at Fordham. He was responsible for game planning the run game, pass protection and third-down blitz packages and prepared the opponent scouting report for the defense.

Prior to that, Jackson was a graduate assistant with the defensive line for two years at Penn State. He completed all opponent and self-scout defensive breakdowns and coached the scout team. Two players he worked with earned national attention, All-American Carl Nassib and consensus All-American Anthony Zettel. Nassib was the Big Ten's Bronko Nagurski-Woodson Defensive Player of the Year and was the Hendricks Award and Lombardi Award winner.

Jackson spent two years as an assistant coach at Stony Brook, first as a graduate assistant and then as assistant defensive line coach. One of his players, Aaron Thompson went on to rank among the top 10 nationally in sacks and earn All-CAA First Team honors. Jackson started his coaching career at LIU Post as a graduate assistant.

Jackson was a three-year captain and three-year starter for LIU Post. He was an All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Second Team honoree as a senior after recording five sacks and 12 tackles for loss for the Pioneers. He was a member of the National Football Foundation's Hampshire Honor Society and was awarded two of the athletics department's most prestigious honors, the Christine Webb Award and the Roy Illowit Award.

Jackson earned his bachelor's degree in physical education science and coaching from Long Island University in 2011 and three master's degrees, one in Interdisciplinary studies from Long Island in 2012, liberal arts and science from Stony Brook in 2014 and educational leadership from Penn State in 2017.

Great hire. Who will move to coaching DB's? Is there another coaching hire yet to be done?

Don't compare Andrew Jackson to these presidents. One of the most impactful presidents.

Hopefully the new coach lives up to the name.

When Andrew Jackson bought The Hermitage in 1804, he owned nine enslaved African Americans. Just 25 years later, that number had swelled to more than 100 through purchase and reproduction. At the time of his death in 1845, Jackson owned approximately 150 people who lived and worked on the property.

Known as a strong-willed, argumentative and combative personality, Jackson, who served as president from 1829 to 1837, inspires conflicting reactions.

Jackson went from poverty to wealth because he personally embraced the institution of slavery. Enslaved workers grew his cotton, built and tended his house and helped him gain a social foothold in Southern society. Jackson owned as many as 161 enslaved people, buying and selling them, using their labor to build his fortune and even bringing them to the White House to work for him.

Andrew Jackson pretty much created the Civil War.
Even though he expanded into Florida and Texas. Annexed Florida. Texas war with Mexico happened when Jackson was president. Jackson recognized Texas independence.
Jackson told John Calhoun no and believed in the Union. Calhoun wanted South Carolina to be able to nullify a Federal Law against tariffs.

Andrew Jackson's stance on the Union is why Sam Houston stepped down as governor of Texas before the Civil War and why Knoxville was Pro Union during the Civil War.

If Jackson allowed his vice president to nullify Federal Laws. This country wouldn't have lasted but at least the Civil War most likely wouldn't have happened.

They are happy with their OLine coach.

How is the BBQ in Morgantown?

He ended up at Charlotte. Hand cares more about BBQ than coaching OL truthfully.
Looking for fork droppers as he calls them.

Goofy eyes TVZ

Know-it-all fool. Some would suggest he knows very little, other than what a google search allows him to know.

Not really...

You are talking about the most controversial president in the history of the United States.
He has been under attack for the last 30-40 years.

People get too caught up in small details and miss the big ones.

You know Sam Houston named his son after him. That is how much he respected the man.

But has nothing to do with the DL coach.

Decent hire. Looks like Lesley is bringing in someone he can trust up front so he doesn't have to worry as much about the DLine.
Lesley is the guy WVU needs to take care of..
Make sure he stays.

Herb Hand coaches offense, this guy is DL Coach allowing Lesley to take on full control of Defense Coordinator. There is still 1 vacancy left on defense from Addae leaving. Brown will announce a new DBs Coach soon. Then all positions will be filled, all offense coaches are returning. Jeff Casteel will slide back into analyst role on defense

I knew Herb was offensive but I figured the school would have took a look at him to help somewhere on the staff. Charlotte made a good hire.

LOL at you assuming he's not any good just because he was at Old Dominion. Jackson joined the Old Dominion staff after spending the 2019 season at James Madison as the defensive tackles coach. While at JMU, the Dukes led the FCS in total defense and was third in scoring defense.

You do realize majority of Brown's staff came from Troy. Another G5 school.

The recent departure of Mountaineer cornerback coach/co-defensive coordinator Jahmile Addae, who has taken a job as Georgia’s defensive backs coach, marks the 12th straight year that there has been change within the football assistant coaching ranks at West Virginia.

The last time the Mountaineers had the same assistant coaches from one season to the next was 2008 to 2009. Since then, change has been an annual theme.

West Virginia has witnessed the turnover of 40 assistant coaching positions in the past 11 years.
