Are we, relatively, immune?

With all of the boycotts going on in basketball, baseball, and yes, even hockey, is college athletics, and in particularly Mountaineer football, immune from this?

Wonder what NB tells the players about things like refusing to stand for the anthem for example.

I'm hoping, thinking, we are somewhat immune to this and the kids just want to play the games.

Is that being naive?

FWIW, T.J. Simmons took some time to talk about the Jacob Blake situation and advocate for change before taking questions from the media today. Also, there is a march tomorrow that some athletes will be in attendance for.

In regard to a boycott? I'm not really sure, but nothing surprises me anymore.

A really easy answer - I know I will get crushed - Why don’t all leagues and teams observe a minute of silence (kneeling or whatever) for “unity and justice” then everyone can stand for the national anthem?

I know that probably over simplifies everything.....

You mean this Jacob Blake:

@Vernon , I think Tim just made a great case to take this to the OT board. Not sure that kind of language and mental image is what the blue lot is for. It seems that there are a few posters here that are just more interested in talking about politics and the societal issues of the day rather than anything to do with WVU sports.

I had the covid in February...

and I rarely get sick...

couldn't taste or smell for 3 days...

Why should all leagues and teams observe a minute of silence for "unity and justice?" What's going on right now is a result of thugs disobeying the laws. If the thugs would stop breaking the laws, they'd have no run-ins with the police and they'd still be alive today. They shouldn't be glorified, celebrated, or given the time of day. Zero respect should be shown toward them just as zero respect would be shown toward any other criminal. This new, lawless society where deceased criminals have statues and paintings created in their honor is sickening.

Will the athletes be following social distancing guidelines and mask requirements as well like normal WVU students do? Or will they be allowed to disobey this while tuition paying students are being threatened with expulsion and fines?

my point is that during theses protests, no one is following the social guidelines that the state and universities are imposing. Students are already meeting with the dean due to supposedly not obeying the guidelines, yet the “STUDENT-athletes” will be not adhering to these guidelines and none of them will be threatened by the Dean.

Because they are making money for the school.

They make money for the athletic department, which is barely even in the black.

The regular tuition-paying students provide for the whole University, even their money is allocated to the athletic department. These students are more important to the university and the state than the “student athletes”.

Although starting this thread I just wanted to, hopefully, hear we weren't like the rest it took a turn to politics. Although that's not what I wanted, I'll say that I completely agree with you here. It's sad, but it's true.

God help us.
