You do realize NY was engulfed in this before the term 'social distancing' was a thing and a single mask was worn. Of course you do.
So you're saying they didn't take it seriously then?

Yeah, it was when the president said "You have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero."
And Fauci said before that it was no big deal. What’s your point?

And Nancy wanted everyone to go to Little China...and Joe Biden thought the travel ban was racist.

You do realize that there are 6-8 times the number of people in NYC as in the entire state of WV, right?

Yes.....but that's on you folks in NY......your leaders ineptness cost thousands and thousands of lives.....You had access to the same info that California and WV had.

Nursing homes in general account for over a third of covid deaths. Bad policy in NY early on? Sure. They don't have a remarkably dissimilar ratio of nursing home covid deaths to total covid deaths.

I'm simply saying that NYC is closely served by 3 international airports, and the majority of people in NYC rely on mass transit to a greater degree than most of the rest of the country. Comparing the number of deaths in WV, mostly rural with no international airports and very little public transportation, to NY state that includes the largest single city in the nation, is not an apples to apples comparison. While the nursing home issue was bad policy, it does not account for the 32,000+ death difference between the 2 states.

Your math is way off....
NYC.....8.3 million
WV.......1.8 million
Sorry, I was taking a swag. I was guessing WV maxing out at 1.5 million and NYC landing in the 9 million range. Still, more than 4 times as many people living in NYC's 302.6 square miles than in WV's 24,038 square miles. Does that help explain the problem? That's not accounting for the 20% of the 4.7 million folks who work in NYC but live outside NYC. That's also not accounting for the number of visitors to NYC as compared to WV.

In case you were wondering, over 22k of the roughly 32k NY state covid deaths were from NYC.

Do you realize that Florida has 2 million more people than NY....but only 3,778 deaths and California has 20 million more people than NY with only 6,373 deaths.
Why are defending the leadership in NY?

Does the fact that Cuomo and DeBlassio FAILED to shut down mass transit, schools and playgrounds in NYC as well as the airports explain the problem?

Am I defending leadership of NY? I wasn't aware of that. In fact, I clearly stated that the nursing home policy at the start of the outbreak was a bad one. If that's a defense, I guess I don't understand the word.

Folks were talking about WV as compared to NY. Also, I've offered explanations for what happened in NYC as compared to other areas. Name a city in FL or CA that relies as heavily on public transportation, anywhere near the scale the NYC relies on it. Over 8 million people in 302.6 square miles, and that not accounting for tourists or the portion of the workforce that commutes into the city for work, a large percentage of them on public transportation.

Those places of business should provide masks if they want them worn inside their business.

Plus in NY, hundreds if not thousands of people were infected before anyone knew it. The genie was out of the bottle before the first nasal swab was done.

Yes you clearly are. The nursing home issue was only one failure out of many. You clearly pointed reasons why it spread as it has....but you failed to mention what they did about it.

I'm sure that played a part. Did they close all the roads to traffic in WV? How do essential workers get to their jobs in NYC if all transportation options are closed to them?

I do think the delay on school closings was bad policy. No matter what policies were enacted, I think NYC was going to be hit hard. Too many people living in close quarters will do that in a pandemic. I'm sure they could have made decisions that would have reduced the impact.

I'll note that NYC has had zero new deaths yesterday, and the state had 9 new deaths. The ones in a rush to open everything back up, are they faring as well? NY was definitely hit hard by covid. I won't deny it. They were also at the leading edge. Did they make mistakes? Absolutely they did. It seems like they learned from them. Not everyone else did though.

And I will freely admit that the last paragraph was a defense of the leadership in NY. I do think they are doing much better than they were. There are a lot of states and cities that can't say the same.

Do you think there is more travel from China to California or China to NY?

Could you point out where I made it political?
Inserting your comments in this thread and saying you weren’t being political is like wading into the middle of a gun fight and saying, “Why did you shoot me? I didn’t fire any shots.”

NY’s first case got infected in Europe.
And the ***** airports were NOT shut down....which was the prerogative of the Gov and dipshit Mayor......not the Feds. Late on mass transit, schools, playgrounds and bars.

All due respect, but that's a load. I can enter a conversation with people, inserting comments, and not be political. I guess you can make the point that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It's up to the reader to interpret my comments with their own filter. I'd argue that reader is making it political, not me. I'd also argue that's part of the problem. If I agree with Trump on an issue, I'm immediately labeled by those on the left. If I disagree on another issue, I'm immediately labeled by the right. The edges are actively trying to push the middle to the fringes, and it's counterproductive to having real discussions and real solutions.

To play devils advocate... 8 x 95 = 760

The nation learned a lot from NYC and how they treated the virus in the hospital and Doctor's offices.

We are STILL changing and modifying treatment as they still don't have a complete grasp of how the virus works.
