WVU’s trash-talking gave Texas Tech 13 points (technical, free throws made, then possession after the free throws for field goals).
The Mountaineers lost by 8.
Oscar, after making a great block that sent the TT shot out of bounds, just had to taunt. TT got 5 points from that mouthing-off (2 free throws, 3-point shot). That’s 1 more point than Oscar scored in the game!
I’m not putting Oscar alone under the bus. Every WVU player who got a T should apologize to 1.8 million West Virginians, Coach Huggins and his teammates.
Was it worth it to spout off and lose the game?
Lesson learned, hopefully. Play basketball and let your performance do the talking, NOT you!
It was obvious that the refs weren’t going to let trash-talk go unpunished by either team in a brutally physical game that looked more like WWF than NCAA. But I don’t care about TT. I care about WVU.
Yes, TT out-hustled, out-shot and out-smarted the Mountaineers. But my alma mater would have won the game if they had just played the game and kept their mouths shut, even on a bad night.
Period.
Macho is too costly. Not if you want to win the Big 12 and March Madness for your (eventual) Hall of Fame coach!
Don’t blame the refs. There were 26 personal fouls on WVU and 28 on Texas Tech.
The difference, again, came in the technical from mouths that refused to stay shut. 13 points! In a game decided by 8 points.
Look, WVU fought back tough while being behind. But you can’t taunt and mouth off when every point counts!
Moretti is a killer when he gets his hands on the ball, and often he was UNGUARDED. Moretti also is a professional flopper and got by with some of those calls.
WVU lost by 8 in a game in which Huggins Heroes made 80.5% of their free throws. That’s been the #1 complaint all season about the Mountaineers, missing free throws. Well tonight they made enough free throws to win the game IF THEY HAD KEPT THEIR MOUTHS SHUT!
Texas Tech made 87.5% of its free throws but they’re a far better charity line team than WVU on the season, so that’s no surprise.
TT was 11 of 17 in 3’s. Again, no surprise. Been their strong suit all season.
Disturbing was that WVU got out-rebounded, 33-27, BECAUSE THE MOUNTAINEERS WERE OUT-HUSTLED! That is NOT the way WVU has played this season.
And penetration passes into the paint were almost non-existent. 5 assists, the worst since 1987!
NO ONE fouled out for WVU because Huggins runs his dozen in and out of the game every game. Moretti and Edwards founded out for TT.
Before the Kansas State rematch in Morgantown Saturday (2 p.m. on one of the ESPN channels), every WVU player who got a T for mouthing off should thoroughly rinse out his orifice and play the game enthusiastically but without taunting and asserting macho superiority! After all, this is the Kansas State team that gave WVU its most embarrassing game … at least till now.
If you want the W, then you have to play the game by the rules, listen to Huggins, keep the Pitbull Defense aggressive but smart, handle the ball well. And shut your mouth!
If you do, you still can win March Madness but you made catching Kansas and Baylor a lot tougher … with your mouth!
