West Virginia won't have a rating before the game and ESPN doesn't rank teams so they have control what the AP voters do and don't do.

ESPN is going to push that game as Texas' first true road game against a 3-1 team who for whatever reason has been circling that game for the last 6-7 months.
Plus it is WVU's homecoming so they don't need a ranking to justify exposure.

WVU is gonna have to be at least 5-1 or 6-1 before anyone is gonna think about ranking them.

Texas already has a loss on the year, so if they lose to WVU it will be looked at more like Texas was over rated than it will look like WVU is worth anything because WVU has only looked good in one game, and that game - NC State - May not end up being that impressive as the year goes on if NC State doesn’t finish the year strong. You misread my point. I was saying imagine how many would watch - based on your contention that people want to see Texas lose - if Texas was a dominant program, because our country loves nothing if not watching successful people (or teams) fall from grace. How many people liked seeing Saban get pants’d by Clemson. But less people care about Texas losing because they aren’t world beaters than would if they were a truly top level football team.

No. WVU beating any one with a pulse this year will be seen as a gotcha game for the other team. Les Miles tried to say that about us, when he said he did not think we were that good. If we get to the end of the season and we have 6 wins we will get votes and maybe even be ranked between 20 and 25. That would mean that we beat TCU, Baylor and K State. We can do that if everything lines up for us.

You are right, but I am assuming that this is going to be one of those years when no one is all that good. There are going to be a lot of barely above 500 teams getting votes. If WVU can scrap together 6 wins, I think WVU will get some attention.

I am hoping that this team continues to grow as the season progresses. I do worry about the depth chart - we really don't have one. But beating those three teams and do well against Ok State at home might be enough. At least I hope so.

I figured just 3 maybe 4 wins going into game 1. But I just like everything we are doing. I like the players the coaches and the way the schedule lines up. I am a bit of a optimist now.

Starts with Recruiting. Not too hard to see.
The blaming Dana only last so long. I have never heard Neal Brown blame Dana so don't do it yourself. It is the easy way out.

Well Neal is 9 months into the job, and most commitments a team would get at this point are kids that have been recruited by a coaching staff at a school since they were at least sophomores, so the whole first year of recruiting by a completely new staff in a new region is gonna be tough unless it is a blue blood program that recruits itself in name.

All that considered, WVU is about on par with where they are normally in recruiting. Looking at it from that perspective, I believe Brown will be able to recruit at a higher level than we normally have seen once he has had a chance to establish his program. We probably are never gonna be a school that pushes top 15 classes each and every year, but we can be a 20-30 ranked recruiting class every year if Brown gets the 10 win seasons rolling.

Right now, WVU needs Brown to get a signature win we weren’t expected to get, and no I don’t believe NC State - while an unexpected very nice win - is gonna turn heads.

He needs to beat Texas or Oklahoma, and neither may be realistic this year, but I think Texas is more likely of the two. For this year, I am just focused on getting to 6 wins (and/or more hopefully). Getting to a bowl is important for the extra practices that this team clearly needs.

I don’t think we can trade scores with Oklahoma based on how Kendall has performed thus far. I think there is a mental barrier the team has against Oklahoma that they don’t have against Texas. They have several wins over Texas that they haven’t had against Oklahoma since the fiesta bowl prior to joining the big 12.

It is too early for me to tell the exact personality the team will ultimately end up with under Brown. I like the lunch pail persona it appears he is going with, as that has been WVU’s bread and butter over its history.

I can’t - in any version of reality - put WVU and Iowa State in the same category, even just as a style comparison.

WVU is one of the top 15 all-time winningest programs in college football history. Iowa State has a history of NOT winning. If WVU claimed an obscure national title from 1914 and had a Heisman winner in 1956, the country would consider our history differently, even if we had a traditional losing program. However, despite being a historically winning program, because we don’t have “the history” that some programs claim, we aren’t considered to be as successful. So I cannot in good conscience ever put WVU in the same category as ISU. It is great that they have been winning some the last could of years, but they aren’t in the same league as WVU based on history, even if they have gotten a couple of wins over us the last couple of years.

You don't have to trade scores when you can control the ball and tire out their Defense.

Not talking about historically. Talking about style of play. Watch Iowa State and watch West Virginia. Even watch Texas Tech.

All the new coaches in the Big 12 are more Iowa State than Oklahoma.

Unless there are big NCAA sanctions inherited from the last coach, I think the 3rd season where you can really judge the current coach. The first 2 seasons can be really rough if you are dealing with 2 completely different styles or cultures. RR didn't inherit a great roster from Nehlen, but what he did have was not at all used to playing a spread offense or odd stack defense. But by season 3 the coach has had time to get his current players used to his style and the recruits he wants to make the team better. In the first season if there is garbage or gold, it is hard to tell in the moment how much is old vs new guard. It's some of both for sure, but to what degree is unknown at the time. So when Dana crashed and burned in his 3rd and limped along in his 4th season, one could argue inheriting already coached up players was key to his success and that season was influenced more by the previous staff than current. If Brown is floundering in his 3rd year it will be hard to argue that it is due to Dana leaving the cupboard bare or residuals of his undisciplined team culture. For the first time in a while, I'm excited to just make a bowl. It seems like Brown is much more likely to make use of the practices and experience where as I got the impression Dana just didn't care. He didn't use all the practices and only really did anything with the starters. So bowl season with him was New Year's or bust as the who cares bowls were going to be chaotic messes without any valuable development of next year's players by the coaching staff.

Wickline is as bad as Rick Trickett.
Both recruit guards and don't know what a tackle looks like.

There is talent at West Virginia. Especially at the skill positions but Neal Brown is trying to build a different style football team
This starts with the OL. Dana wasn't afraid to say screw the OL and find ways to move the ball.
