I said from the beginning that China was set up to withstand a lot more heat than we were. That's kind of the point of a dictatorship, you don't have to worry about what the people think nearly as much.
Along those same lines, Xi can see now that he can't trust anything Trump says. If he makes a deal with him now, what's to stop him from doing this all again later if he sees it as politically advantageous. I think it's more likely that China will resist making any kind of deal in the hopes that it hurts Trump in 2020 and they can then deal with someone a bit more stable.
