as long as they don't have to pay them.

It's also funny to see how many politicians have been bought by the Chinese.

Says a fan of the tariffs man. Classic

Do you think that tariffs are in place to generate revenue for the US or as a negotiating tactic? Like everything else, people lose track of the original intent of the action.

I think everyone agrees that that our current trade policies with China is not even close to being fair for our US companies. Tariffs are about the only lever the US has to force a policy change.

What other levers do we have to help us negotiate a better deal? If we have something that is more effective with less collateral damage, I will pay for the Fed Ex to send your ideas to the commerce department.

It'll be interesting to see if more companies leave China......

And are you a fan of how the Chinese steal our tech and violate international trade norms?
Companies will not leave the #2 economy in the world. They will shift some production to Vietnam.

I am not a fan of China stealing our tech. Not sure what international trade norms they violate, but there is plenty that China does that needs corrected. That's why our lone wolf tariffs makes me so pissed. It is the absolute worst way to handle it. To combat China, we've decided to light money on fire, punch ourselves in the balls, borrow money from China, and pay for our ball care.

I think people try and convince themselves Trump uses tariffs as a negotiation. History and facts say he just likes tariffs. He brokered the spectacular new NAFTA (lol) and yet tariffs with Canada and Mexico remain. Public interviews from the 80s, 90s and 2000s all show him espousing his love of tariffs.

What better way? Join some sort of partnership of trans pacific nations to pressure China as a bloc. Arrest and prosecute people that steal our IP, tech, whatever buss word - like we did with that Huawei broad. Don't bother sending these common sense ideas, Trump doesn't want to hear them. He sees trade deficits as a bad thing.

Show me the history and facts that proves that Trump loves tariffs? He has been in political office for a little over two years. Not even DJT takes on a China without checks and balances form others in his administration. Negotiating with Mexico and Canada is still being ratified, maybe Congress can help speed up the process.

So, your idea is to join some sort of Asian economic bloc to force China into playing fair? Have we not been part of the TPP and it got us to this point? China is the 800 lb Gorilla in Asia, they have a military (getting larger by the day) and the means to make life miserable for the entire Asia-Pacific community.

Japan absolutely hates China and vice versa. If you ever want to experience racism, go to Japan and ask about their Chinese neighbors. Japan does not want to mess them, and China will NEVER give a concession to Japan! Who else will side with us? S. Korea? Not many, If any countries in Asia want to get into a pissing match with China, but they sure in hell love us standing up to them.

“Tariffs are the greatest.”

“Tariffs are working big-time.”

“Tariffs are working far better than anyone ever anticipated.”

“Because of tariffs we will be able to start paying down large amounts of the $21 trillion in debt that has been accumulated.”

“Tariffs will make our country much richer than it is today.”

That article is about his sound bites in the last 10 days trying to justify his position that has already taken place. I was told that he historically loves tariffs.

Again, 12/18, less than 6 months ago and after the tariffs started...at this rate, it will take about more than a year to to go back to 2000

Amazing seeing conservatives swoon over this Trump Tax hike. Also amazing to see them screaming that we need to fix all of the things with China that TPP was meant to fix. How many of you guys supported Obama and TPP again? Was it because Trump told you it was bad?

He had entertained the idea of a trade war with Japan, in nearly identical terms, in 1999. “Perhaps there has to be a trade war. It’s not going to last very long because Japan, if they don’t sell to this country, they go out of business, OK?” Trump said, The Wall Street Journal reported.

In the 1980s, Trump lambasted Japan for “taking advantage of” the U.S., along with other countries. He railed against the trade deficits the U.S. had amassed with Japan and other trade partners. “It’s time for us to end our vast deficits by making Japan, and others who can afford it, pay,” Trump wrote in an open letter “To The American People” that ran as a full-page newspaper ad in 1987.

Ford is now moving more into China because of the easy to win trade war. Hooray?

Reuters) - Ford Motor Co plans to start production of new luxury Lincoln models in China for that market as they are launched, starting with the new Corsair later this year, to benefit from lower costs and avoid the risk of tariffs, a top executive said on Monday.

“It’s a huge, huge opportunity for Lincoln because we see China as Ground Zero for Lincoln given the size of the market and how well the brand has been received,” Chief Financial Officer Bob Shanks said at a Goldman Sachs conference in New York.

This is the ad, nothing about tariffs, but wants other countries to pay for the military protection that we have provided to protect their interests. Just like everything else, someone takes something out context to prove something that is not there.

He also discussed "unfair" trade with Japan in 1987 on Larry King. The fact that you can't see his ad about "free" protection and "unfair" trade being about tariffs, I literally can't help you. Good luck to you.

if we didn't pay taxes, how would things like roads and skools get funding?
Schools are local taxes. Roads should be built with tolls (taxes) or fuel taxes. We shouldn't, nor are we funding them with tariff revenues.

He was focused on currency manipulation more than free trade (manufactured goods). If you remember, during that time, Japan was buying up property in the US at an alarming rate. If we are filling in the blanks, I would go with that as opposed to Trump caring about a factory worker in Toledo back in the 80's. Why would he spend his own money if it were not to protect his business interesting back then? The adage "follow the money" rings true in this scenario.

I might be missing something, but how would a tariff hurt Japan in such a way as to help his own business interests- and we are still in the 80's MJ

China can tax us at 100% and the Left wouldn't care as long we're paying pay them. Trump tries to get some skin in the game in terms of transfer payments from them to us and the Left has uncontrollable vaginal bleeding. :scream:

We need to offer a free box of these to every Leftist upset we are now charging China what they charge us in tariffs.

You probably don't know much of this history about tariffs.

Tariffs, the taxes that made America great
https://buchanan.org/blog/tariffs-the-taxes-that-made-america-great-136986

excerpt:
"A tariff may be described as a sales or consumption tax the consumer pays, but tariffs are also a discretionary and an optional tax. If you choose not to purchase Chinese goods and instead buy comparable goods made in other nations or the USA, then you do not pay the tariff.

China loses the sale. This is why Beijing, which runs $350 billion to $400 billion in annual trade surpluses at our expense is howling loudest. Should Donald Trump impose that 25% tariff on all $500 billion in Chinese exports to the USA, it would cripple China’s economy."

...more

"Tariffs were the taxes that made America great. They were the taxes relied upon by the first and greatest of our early statesmen, before the coming of the globalists Woodrow Wilson and FDR.

Tariffs, to protect manufacturers and jobs, were the Republican Party’s path to power and prosperity in the 19th and 20th centuries, before the rise of the Rockefeller Eastern liberal establishment and its embrace of the British-bred heresy of unfettered free trade."
