Since everyone thinks the same why shouldn't coaching jobs be ranked.

No school in the AAC has made a bigger commitment to winning big than Houston. The Cougars have a new stadium (opened in 2015) and are paying a coach — who, they hired away from a Power 5 school — a guaranteed $20 million over the next five years. On the field, Houston has enjoyed six straight winning seasons, highlighted by the 13–1 mark recorded by Tom Herman in 2015.



33. West Virginia

West Virginia will always be a strange fit in the Big 12, but you can be a consistent winner in Morgantown. There are no pro sports to share the spotlight with; the Mountaineers are the only game in town. The state doesn’t produce a ton of talent, but you are close to large population bases in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Virginia.

The only thing that bugs me in this whole deal is how it is portrayed that our coach was stolen like we tried desperately to keep him but failed when the truth is Dana wanted an extension and raise and Lyons told him he hadn’t earned it, so they each decided to move in a different direction. It worked out well for everyone but these hacks just have to spin it like some one got the best of the other.

Don't downplay the commitment UH is making here by guaranteeing $20M for them in football and basketball. They disparately want to be be a player in the next round of mergers( if any). I look at it more of buying than stealing a coach. It was a perfect fit for them at the proper time. Needed a higher profile coach and DH was ready after he read the tea leaves next year.

Hired away doesn't necessarily mean stolen.
You cannot attempt to say that he wasn't hired away from West Virginia.

West Virginia is going to have to pay for a coach sooner or later.
Just imagine the cost if Dana actually won. You think WV is going to give a coach 5-7 million a year with a huge buyout.

Especially considering the schools they are competiting against.
If Houston with a few big money donors can get whatever they want. What do you expect from Texas, Oklahoma, Baylor and TCU would all have multiple people like Tilman Fertitta.

Yes they would have paid 5-7 million, if he actually won games. Holgs buyout was huge. Why do you think WVU kept him longer than 4 years.

Holgs Houston contract sounds very similar to WVU contract.

It takes money from the outside.
Someone could have written the check to buyout Dana.
Someone could have written the check to keep Dana. It isn't always the Athletic Director's job
That revenue is usually spent.

If Neal Brown wins the Big 12 he will be a hot commodity. Someone will have to pay to keep him.
His asking price will be much higher than Dana.
Truthfully as of right now Dana as a commodity is worth more than Neal Brown because he has won at a P5 level.
A lot of the G5 coaches who move up do not have success.

So you believe that WVU doesn't have donors worth millions. You need to look again at the alumni of WVU.

Yeah cause nobody is committed to WVU football. We might as well just pack it in and give up. Good thing you researched all this. I'll inform the board so money for WVU sports is not wasted.

They are not doing enough in terms of generating revenue.

And this during a 7-6 season.

They overpaid for him. No other school was coming after him with that kind of money. Congrats to them. Everyone got what they wanted.

That only works IF Neal Brown wins and Dana doesn't have success at Houston.

Even then WV will have to open up the checkbook for Neal Brown. Pretty much what you see with Matt Campbell.
All these coaches have agents who have to feed their families. A 9-3 record will get his agent trying to get an extension with a buyout.
What if Neal Brown wins the Big 12?
You think other schools won't be interested.
I will use Auburn for example. Gus Malzahn used his SEC West Championship game Appearance and the threat of Arkansas to get a huge extension.
Auburn wants him gone. Two good years of Neal Brown could send him back to Alabama.

A fool and his money soon part. That is what I anticipate from schools and donors willing to overpay for 8 win seasons. And what is with this what if game about if Dana actually won? He didn’t so your point is pointless.

Rich Rodriguez was ready to leave for Alabama and WVU donors stepped up because HE WAS winning. Dana wasn’t. Thus nobody is broken up about him leaving, and no one is upset with him either.

tREC club didn't want Rich Rodriguez. He was a Mike Price type coach. The main booster group at Alabama didn't support his hiring. If you don't have tREC you better be the best damn coach in the world because you will be gone.

Michigan wanted him and the boosters didn't have an issue. As soon as that happened he was gone.

Dana Holgersen wasn't asking for anything from what I have heard.
I think his time was finished and 2018 was his last season.
Neal Brown will be in the same position. You are not in the Big East anymore so 10+ win seasons will be an anomaly.

It is not concluded yet.
WV goes 4-8 in 2018. This could logically happen. I guess you can blame Dana Holgersen.

The what if is a factor because it will determine the conclusion of this.

Everyone loves a new coach like they love their new wife.
I been married three times. They get uglier and older by the day. Then the woman flirting at you every morning looks much better.

They really thought they had a shot to advance out of the regional in softball yesterday.
