100% That's my biggest gripe. I might even agree with the teachers stance and support them. Absolutely no f'n reason for a strike.
I've already said I support higher teacher salaries and I've always voted for every school levy even though I have zero kids in the public school. I'll never vote for another levy. The teachers are liars.....they claim they want to improve education in WV.....but they REJECT every attempt to do just that.

In states that cannot afford much teacher raises, like West Virginia, I wonder why there can't be something worked out for huge tax incentives/breaks for anyone looking to teach in this state? For example, exempt from property taxes? Something like that to counter the inability to raise wages. For f**k's sake, we allow corporations to rape our tax laws and they profit billions.

You realize that the reason Carmichael attached the charter school thing to the bill was in an attempt to break the teachers union, right? It has nothing to do with education reform, and everything to do with breaking the union rights of teachers.
Break the union.......with a couple charter schools? You are an idiot. The bill is full of education reform but the union cronies want business as usual just like you want.

So we improve education by robbing funds from public schools to give to charter schools that have less regulation than public schools?

F’ucking idiot.

That's why I laugh at those proposing charter schools. Because they can be avoided by simply doing ONE thing.....drop the regulations on the public schools that they would do for the charter schools. Pretty simple fix, isn't it? And no tax money lost.

Robbing funds from public schools. The schools that would be converted are funded and would still be getting funded. This strike has zero to do with improving education.....it's an anti-improving school move.

Lol, yeah, that is how it is playing out, these must just be the "loser" teachers.
You narrow minded folks may get your way.....but it will be more "business as usual"......public education in WV will be at the bottom of all ratings.....just where your leader have placed it with their lack of vision and unwillingness to change.

And who would that be?

The Governor?
The President of the Senate?
The House Majority Leader?
WV Members of US Congress?

The state has a surplus. Has anyone in political leadership suggested increased spending for education in this state?

Dah......plenty of increased spending in this bill. In fact more than has ever been in any previous bill.

I think education should be a priority. I would like to know what we spend per pupil compared to other states to start. It's way too easy to say that we need to spend more money without taking a look to see where we are right now.

Surplus thanks to Republicans and yes...there was a teacher pay raise just last year. Any more questions?

The union (and by default the teachers) don't want competition.
This comment I saw sums it up:

"It is disgraceful that the teacher's unions are using the children as pawns when they don't get their way. Why are they afraid of competition? Don't they think they're doing a good job but can't compete with what the parents would like to see happen?
And all of this after a two year 10% pay raise and education expenditures totaling into the hundreds of millions of dollars!

The responsibility for education policy rests with elected representatives of the people. Not with teachers or union officials. If you don't like education policy, the proper course of action is to elect different representatives.

Nostradumbass strikes again.

SB451 dead.
Do you really think that tabling the bill means the teachers had public support?

The house didnt support the senate bill before the strike. That is why they changed it and sent it back.

As of 2016, WV was middle of the pack in spending per pupil.......that includes overall spending and instructional spending.

If parents want a better education, they have choices dumbsh!t without charter schools pulling away from the public school. They can do any of the following:

1. Pay for a tutor after school
2. Get involved with the school as a tutor
3. Home school their child
4. Become a responsible parent and force their child to learn like we all did.
5. Go to college, become a teacher, and show everyone how easy it is

Self brag then. My team is working with mobile, cloud, AI, and visual recognition. We will be working directly with a large west coast tech corp on their next technology before it public betas. This effort is for some of the largest brands you know. I can be replaced, but it wouldn't be easy.
