Just had a similar experience in an elevator

True story, in college I was smoking some weed with my roommates who also played football. They invited another football player who was black and from Western PA. He brought along a BB player from NYC. We were sitting there passing the bong and watching MTV and the BB player just went off on a rant. The black football player looked at him and said, could you speak english, hell, I'm black and I can't understand you. If you followed WVU sports back in the 80's you would know both of these guys. I guess he was just another black man wearing a MAGA hat.
Basically the “if black people can say the n word then why can’t I!?” defense. Good luck in your endeavors.

OK, thanks for enlightening me. By the way, the original poster did not say anything about what race or ethnicity he was referring to, for all we know, the coach from the Waterboy could have been in the elevator with his wife.
I work for a company based in San Diego and one of the account managers that worked there was from Hurricane and had a very thick southern twang. She dropped off of a conference call and another account manager asked if anyone had any problems understanding what she said. I jokingly said that I was also from WV and I couldn't understand her when she got nervous and started talking faster than normal. I guess I am a racist.

That hurts my feelings. I guess I won't talk about doing lines off of my girlfriends stomach or doing magic mushrooms with my buddies and hanging out in bars. And that was when I was handing out Reagan/Bush flyers. In fact I am more liberal now than I was back then when I was exploring the drug scene.
In fact, I went to a pot dispensary in CA a couple of months ago and bought some edibles and even brought them back on the plane with me. Tried them and did not like the buzz. Ended up giving them to my daughter who is a Jr. at WVU and told her to make some friends. It did blow her mind and took them without question. I was a cool Dad for a day.
My dad said that when he went into the Army in WWII, he was assigned to a unit that was full of guys from NY & NJ. He claimed it took him a couple of weeks before he could understand what most of those guys were saying.
Damn Minnesota people evidently couldn't understand me at the sports bar when I said I wanted the WVU football game on. They turned it on for 15 minutes on one television, then turned every tv in the place to a hockey game on the hour. They understood me after that.
I couldn't understand the place I went in San Diego a few months ago. The entire place, except for two managers, were day workers from Mexico. I took four years of Spanish way back when, but they were just too fast. I know they were laughing at the gringo at times.
I went to an authentic hispanic market not too far away from here a couple years ago, the entire place was a Mexican flea market. A few of the places refused to serve my blonde wife and I. We didn't sue anyone.
There's been plenty of times I haven't understood someone's accent perfectly, especially in the city. Oh, and webex calls. Those suck. You just fight through it, or let the laugh at the gringo.
