These students were brought to DC to March, they are political — I admire, respect, and encourage that — but don’t act like there wasn’t motivation on their side to mix it up here. Who threw the first stone? I fvcking don’t know. Even if I think the first stone was thrown at the kids, I would have led them away immediately.....not approved the chants.....and got park police to diffuse the situation ASAP.

I might not agree with the kids politically, but they shouldn’t have been the focus of any namecalling at all. Anyone that threw those insults at that group of kids is despicable.

You repeated his lie, with knowledge, and without correction. You are defending him.
And I’d like to point out, that the rage some of you feel in this thread....the quick aggressive desire to attack with absolute justification without discussion or analysis that isn’t team oriented.....is the same emotional fuel that causes groups in these cases to act foolishly.

You're having a problem with facts today. Rage? Show me my rage ITT. I called out Bru for lying, and now I'm doing the same to you.

What am I lying about?

You knew this was false, and repeated it.

He said he was walking to the steps and was blocked.

I haven't done anything in this thread except call out Bru's lies, and now your's.

It’s not a lie to say what someone else said. The second video I watched didn’t expose that as a lie. Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t, it’s irrelevant to my op. Just a point of focus that distorts the problem of this situation on both sides, imo.

I find it interesting that fault can’t be found on both groups here. Everyone has to support their team I guess

100% of the fault is on high school kids! Phillips started this and he lied about the entire event. The only team I am on is a team that is being attacked. I have zero respect for adults who attach kids. Phillips is a paid protester. He has been involved in at least 3 other events across the country, all liberal causes.

The tomahawk chant was used to offend, maybe justified, but it was meant to offend.
Yeah because why would teenage boys associate the tomahawk chop with indians after watching sportcenter for 10 years?

I don’t see the fault solely on the kids, my op in this thread stated that. In fact, I don’t think any of the kids should be in trouble here, but the chaperones should be — if I were a parent I’d be livid. The awkward smiling kid in the pic shouldn’t be blasted, but he wasn’t completely innocent here. If the old man is a lying paid protestor, I hope it’s exposed and he receives more backlash than any of the kids. Activists are often at multiple events, esp when causes are the same or linked.

As a teacher, my perspective of the incident automatically focuses on the failure of the chaperones. My op in this thread called the insults yelled at the kids, and the people who hurled them, despicable.

Yet......

“I did smile at one point because I wanted him to know that I was not going to become angry, intimidated or be provoked into a larger confrontation,” Sandmann remembered. “I am a faithful Christian and practicing Catholic, and I always try to live up to the ideals my faith teaches me — to remain respectful of others, and to take no action that would lead to conflict or violence."

Open it up, read his replies. This is one of the boy's brother.

WTF is Bru doing liking this post? He wrongfully labeled these kids as racists.

I enjoy good and honest opinions on subjects. Boom is delivering that. I have no problem with someone disagreeing with me with a valid point. I don't pretend to be the authority on all subjects and am not. Never has been my argument and never will.

The 3 second FSU chant was wrong. That's the one thing I fault the boys for. Now do everyone else in that video.
And I doubt hs kida are doing that chant to insult native americans. They see that chant associated with indians all the time.

I can understand some issue with the chaperones but I am not sure what they could have done to prevent this from happening. It seems that the kids went there to participate in the march (some called it political, but in reality, is was a religious gathering) and this was where the kids were told to gather when they finished up sight seeing. One article said the chaperones allowed for the school cheers so as to keep the kids together and to drown out the protestors. Not sure you can call the cops for this and let's face it, it's DC on the steps of the Lincoln monument, I would bet there are some form of protesters almost every weekend. On top of that, they had to stay in place as this was the gathering place to get back on the bus.

What would have happened if the chaperones directly interacted with the 3rd group? Would that had made it safer or less safe?

Chaperones or not, the adults here acted poorly. The kids were measured in their response. They even policed their own.

To think that the chaperones couldn’t have led the kids to another area of the monument is foolish, or you just don’t know that area well at all. Getting park police involved would’ve been in response to the insults and to just have their presence in the area to avoid escalation. Allowing the protestors to comethat close to my kids wouldn’t have been ok with me personally. I would have been the one in the picture, because I would have been asking the gentleman to please move away from my students.

Luckily the situation didn’t escalate into a physical altercation, but now those kids have to deal with this bs.....the school has to deal with this bs......and the parents have to deal with this bs. I think it could have been avoided.

That's where I do fault them. As soon as I saw fake vet face to face with one of my kids, I would've been in between.
I agree. I think the focus needs to be placed on the chaperones, as i said in my op, they failed these kids. If they used the kids to push their personal political views, and I’m not saying they did, they should be punished to the full extent. If they are teachers, their employment should be in jeopardy. If they are parents, they should be apologetic to the students and visible in the media to absorb the blame.

The kids did nothing wrong so what would the chaperones be responsible for?

Says you. I think they did, and I explained it.

The DC school trips I've been on, only a handful were teachers, the rest were volunteer parents who wanted to pay to go to DC. Most not used to dealing with students, or even being responsible for a group, for that matter. Even the coordinator was a art teacher or something like that. Any coach used to dealing with bent parents would be better in that situation. They froze, plain and simple.

The focus needs to be on the press and Mr. Phillips. Remember the 3rd group was making fun of Mr. Phillips prior to him interacting with the kids:

From an article:

Phillips told the Detroit Free Press that he had seen the white Catholic students “attacking these four black individuals.”

“There was that moment when I realized I’ve put myself between beast and prey,” he told the newspaper. “These young men were beastly and these old black individuals was their prey, and I stood in between them and so they needed their pounds of flesh and they were looking at me for that.”

It was all untrue, of course – but that did not stop the mainstream media from going nuclear.

Impossible, the kids blocked his path. He didn't go to them.
