On one hand it's convenient. Makes it that you always have the most update versions of the software. On the other hand, it's more expensive in the long run. A program like Autocad.... hell, it's thousands a year now, where as you use to be able to buy it for thousands, but maintain that same version for years.

Adobe did that to us last year and really played havoc with our budgets....... It’s also going to force users to update their OS/Compouters to keep up with the new features and overhead.

I think I may have over broad stroked my rant. Specifically, f*** Adobe.

Saw this with my computer purchase last year. MS Office is now a subscription.

I wager that the next subscription model will be Windows itself.

Adobe went this route a few years back and for some users it makes perfect sense. Instead of dropping over a grand on their Master Series collection for programs like Premiere Pro and After Dark, users can utilize the software for much less upfront.

Autodesk is the one that really stings. Even within our firm I have trouble justifying spending that much a year on subscription to use their apps.

Smaller, niche, software it makes more sense. We pay a yearly "maintenance" fee for our estimating/accounting software, but I'm even seeing it in much smaller programs that use to be one and done purchases.

This is why I have containers full of older, outdated, software.
