Intense man it seemed. Did a great job in every character I watched him perform.
He really wasn’t intense in person. Super nice guy, very personable. I met and talked with him 4 or 5 times. An iconic figure.

Any word on what killed him? I heard a rumor about him being in the early stages of dementia a couple of years back, but I couldn't run it down.

I guess sort-of thought his on-screen persona might have been largely an act......though it may well have been represenative of his belief set.....and that he indeed might not have been as, what's the word, bellicose as he came across.

Not that it's any of my business, but under what circumstances did you come across him those 4 or 5 times ?? I mean, was he doing personal appearances at gun shows, or did he perhaps have a parallel career as a corporate speaker ???

One of them was a “Mail Call” episode. I actually submitted a question to the show for the purpose of grabbing some exposure to our unit. I got to brief him offscreen on our capability set.

Met him again about a year later in Iraq in 03 when he was doing a tour and meeting with the combat forces. Met Ollie North on that one as well.

Several years later I crossed paths again a couple of times. And the last time I ran into him at a midweek matinee at a movie theater that he was taking his wife to and I was doing the same. We were like the only people in the theater. Just happened to get in line behind him at concessions.
