Chances Spavital is Replaced?

Hated this hire when Dana announced it, and now that the season is over I dislike it even more. Our offense was predictable all year, and while the run game had semi-respectable numbers it constantly placed us in 3rd and long situations only to be bailed out by Grier improvising and heaving it 40 yards downfield. We had zero rhythm and couldn't sustain drives all season.

Dana needs to man up and get rid of his buddy IMO. Here are some potential replacements if a change is made:

-Matt Canada (inexplicably fired by LSU)
-Hugh Freeze (unemployed)
-Kendall Briles (OC at FAU)
-Dan Enos (OC at Arkansas, left when BB got fired)
-Sterlin Gilbert (OC at USF)
-Brian Wright (OC at Toledo)

I'm not thrilled with some of Spavital's calls but through 10 games (Grier playing) that offense was top 10. It lacked flow at times but it was decent overall.

I wish Dana would be more impactful on play calling. He's much better than Spavital. He is more experienced. Through last season he had already went through that growing pains period of not making it too complicated.

Spavital does that a lot and it kills momentum and drives. It also gets your best qb injured when you try and run him like he's Major Harris on a bootleg. That play call cost WVU 2 wins (Texas and probably a Bowl Game and I hate losing to Texas)

As for the replacements you listed, not any better IMO or not feasible.

Matt Canada (inexplicably fired by LSU)-not if you watched that offense.

-Hugh Freeze (unemployed) and for a a few good reasons-calling hookers, cheating at Ole Miss like their SMU, and a total hypocrite as a Bible thumping Christian. And yes I am a Christian and nothing burns me up more than this type of hypocrite.

-Kendall Briles (OC at FAU)-how many rapes/sexual assaults were covered up at Baylor while him and daddy were there? That's why he's at FAU.

I'm not a moralist but Freeze and Briles make me sick for different reasons.

-Dan Enos (OC at Arkansas, left when BB got fired)-hot and cold and he's so much more run oriented.

-Sterlin Gilbert (OC at USF) - not a bad OC but it's a different offense.

-Brian Wright (OC at Toledo)-pretty good vs MAC schools but the offense was a total no show in the bowl game and there was no injuries with the qb.

My hope is Dana is more involved in planning and play calling. Grier 2 years in this offense should be better and he had so many drops by the WRs it was sad. Next year WVU should win 10+ games.

Or we could go the route that Gundy and OK State did. Did anyone read that amazing story? His OC is from a small Division 2 or 3 school that nobody had heard of.....except Gundy.

Matt Canada is still the LSU OC. However, LSU averaged yards per game is 54th in the country, points per game is 71st in the country and only converted 40.0 percent of first downs, 65th in the nation. That's a lot of NFL talent to be so lowly.

Other than Derrius Guice, there is not NFL talent on their offense, they have bad receivers and an extremely mediocre QB. Canada is leaving after their bowl game so I'd assume he would be available. The guy was fantastic at Pitt and has been successful at every stop he's made. I'd love to see him at WVU.

Coach O is dumb for firing him, how he got the HC job in the first place is beyond me.

I'd be find with that as well. I am not familiar with too many D2 and D3 OCs so I didn't include them in my list.

I'm sorry but you're mistaken about Coach O and about the talent level on offense. Besides Guice, Chark, Weathersby, and Clapp are likely to be drafted and possibly Moore.

Eh, I have family that are LSU Tigers so I follow them relatively closely and I'd love to know what you think I'm wrong about. Etling is not good, although he did improve with Canada. Gage and Chark and mediocre at best, and D. Williams, while a good backup for his career is not an NFL RB. The OL will be better next year but they weren't anything special this season, and were inconsistent all year.

Coach O was a failure at OM and is already showing his stubbornness, ALA Les Miles, by running out his hand picked OC after one year. Coach O is a fraud and the hire reeks of a good ole boy network selection.

Canada would do well here IMO.

I added this to the post above: Besides Guice, Chark, Weathersby, and Clapp are likely to be drafted and possibly Moore. I don't know what good ol' boy network you think hired Orgeron but he was hired by Miles and wasn't the first choice for HC. Tom Herman was actively pursued. LSU offered him before Texas. There was an agreement then the agent came back and said Texas is offering more money. Alleva immediate stopped pursuing Herman and hire Orgeron shortly thereafter.

So they went after one guy, maybe two if you include Fisher and then immediately shut it down to hire a man who is a proven failure as a HC and has no coordinator experience.

I appreciate the discussion, but IMO it was a terrible hiring process by Alleva as he didn't even pursue any other candidates. LSU is a top 10 job, they aren't Syracuse or UConn.

We'll see. BTW, Canada is trying to leave LSU evidently without informing LSU. That's the issue.

The offense has been predictable the whole time Holgorsen has been here. Wvu was 17th in total yards and 23rd in points scored. It is the best offensive production we have had in years. I'm not sure what you are complaining about.

He could get fired...agreed. After all DH needs somebody to blame for another disappointing season finish and bowl disaster.

He won't get fired, he could get demoted. He is responsible for several of the recruits we just signed. Wickline is the one who needs fired. The O-line were underachievers this year. Dews did a terrible job with the running backs as well, but what do you expect from someone that had never coached running backs ever. But what is amazing to me is nobody is talking about how bad the defense was. SMH.

What Spavs needs is a raise. You want the best? You have to pay the best! Spavs would be a better coach (immediately) if he was paid like a better coach. Warez

Here is a way to finally solve all of our coaching problems. I propose that we go coachless. Fire 'em all. The team could elect captains and they could direct the practices and make game decisions. We would still probably go 7-6 and all those coaching salaries could be put back in the university coffers. Then all we would need is to find a shoe company willing to write checks to recruits families and we would have recruiting covered too. Ergo...problem solved. No more coaches to complain about. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Are you serious Buster?
You think we should go coachless?

I mean I'm all for firing the PA announcer, the scoreboard/video board operator who refuses to show the replay but drives me nuts with the stupid tv and movie clip videos, and the band director, but I think we should keep a few coaches around, at the least the quality control staff.

Dana gave him a little too much rope this year. Dana should have been more assertive with Jake inside the twenties on both ends of the field. There were times in those situations when WVU needed to go to the Diamond formation that has served it so well over the past few years, but it was as if Spavital didn't know it was in the playbook or how to run it.

This is my biggest problem. Our run game had no creativity and every time we gave the ball to o ur RBs it seemed to be on a delay or draw which would get stuffed against decent defenses.

Run behind the damn fullback or H back sometimes. Oklahoma State does this well and there's no reason we can't
