A reminder to be thankful

The wife of a good friend of mine had a severe asthma attack a couple of nights ago. She suffered a collapsed lung, and her heart stopped in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. They were able to revive her at the hospital. They sedated and intubated her. Today they are going to try to wake her. They don't know what her state will be when they do. They are both mid-40's, been marred for 25 years, and they have 4 kids - 1 a recent college grad, 2 in college, and 1 that's in grade school. We're all hoping for good news, but it's a reminder that anything can happen. Obviously, no time is a good time for this to happen, but a couple of days before Christmas seems particularly bad.

I'll give a good story to counteract this one. Our church committed a break in the first weekend of December.

Backstory: Mom and dad, both druggies, have died. Their two kids are now with his mom. She's in her 70's or 80's. Prior to our break-in, dad had ripped out the wiring to the house, there were holes in the floor, the walls, drug paraphernalia everywhere, and in general was not a house that could be lived in.

The project started last spring with our women performing a yard sale. They raised $700. At that time, they didn't know where it would go. They took that $700, used it for a barbecue fundraiser, and turned the $700 into $2,500.

We found out about this family in October, and that's when it was decided. We knew $2,500 would fix the home up, but knew it would work out. By mid-November, plans were mostly in place for the break-in. We were asking anyone and everyone for donations. An Electrician donated his time. A plumber too. We ended up with a new heat pump and flooring donated. In all, over $10,000 worth of materials, and who knows how much labor. We sent grandma and kids to Charlotte for the weekend, and within 2.5 days had renovated their home to where they could live in it.

The kids had never had a Christmas tree, nor presents. They did this year.

Merry Christmas ya'll.

That's a tough one. Don't know if they are spiritual....but anyway a prayer is on the way.

Kudos to you guys. It's great to hear about people doing great things like that.

I wish the family well. Yes, it is never a good time for a medical emergency.

The initial reports are good. She's breathing on her own. While still groggy from meds, she does seem to be with it when awake. She was lucky that her heart didn't stop until after the paramedics were working on her. I'm sure the road ahead will have some challenges, but it appears she avoided permanent brain damage.
