  • Through the first six weeks of the NFL season, total viewership of games is down 7.5 percent, compared with the first six weeks of 2016.
  • Compared with the first six weeks of the 2015 season, NFL ratings are off 18.7 percent -- a sharp drop.
  • In the past week, Credit Suisse lowered its price targets on both Fox and CBS stock, citing NFL ratings declines.
  • "If ratings don't improve materially, we see a potential headwind to domestic advertising revenues," the investment bank's analyst Omar Sheikh stated.

So what's your point? (and who cares?) I guess if you crunch all the numbers someone could come up with the total number of Trump pissbabies that have changed the channel on the NFL, yawn.

I guess the question would be......WHY?

1. CTE causing the sport to lose fans? A lot of outspoken former players saying "I'll never let my kid play football" doesn't help.

2. Pathetic play by the players.......this is a league of the QB.......sad reality is, the QB's (as a whole) SUCK! Games aren't fun to watch anymore for a lot of people.

3. Too many commercials..........no explanation needed.

4. Season is too long........you have 4 preseason games and then 16 regular season games and then the playoffs........just like MLB playing 81 home games, it's hard to fill up the stadiums every home game, especially when the opposing team (or home team) SUCKS!

5. Ticket prices = too much; NFL satellite packages = too expensive. I have the NFL Sunday Ticket, but it's getting to be too expensive anymore.

6. People have "cut the cord"........

7. Politics........sure, the anthem debate has costed some viewership.....

My point about all this is..........if anyone tries to say "I told you so" that the viewership is down do to just one thing, they are sadly mistaken. The NFL ratings are just like what happened to Pro Wrestling, NASCAR, etc. The product isn't as good as it used to be, it's still being marketed and priced as if it is greater, and the people aren't buying it.

I think you are aware that there has been a lot of discussion about this on THIS board. Just posting some facts......Does that bother you? You can make all your points if you wish....I was just posting some information I saw on ESPN. And BTW....I still watch all the NFL games that I am interested in....just like I have done for years.

I agree with this post. Id only add that with a declining viewership, it doesn’t do well to piss off 38% of the potential viewership.

Look it up.....laugh all you want.....but that's a fact!

Also, how are you getting NFL games after cutting the cord? I'd love to know........
I have a built in OTA antenna that until last F'N night used to get me all my locals in HD for free. But those bastards at Suddenlink did some update yesterday and now they are all scrambled/ Have an external OTA for a TV not in my house that still seems to be working though.

#3, #4,#7 leads to #6. I would add a lot of people prefer college football and after three straight days of multiple games, people get tired. I'm not sure that #1 is a problem with viewership unless it's all the reviews for targeting.

PSVue and games from Baltimore and Washington OTA stations. With cable was only getting Washington stations........no Baltimore. PSVue also has NFL Network and many other sports networks. AND who in the hell watches Pro Wrestling? I suspect very few.

They've also stretched the viewable times. I think Thursday night football hurts them more than it helps.

I can only speak for myself, but I limited my viewership because of the thousands of commercials. If there's a game I really want to watch, I'll record it, then start the recording about 2 hours after kick off. I usually catch the end of the game live.

My son loved it when he was 8. I'm still wanting on my ROI with the 50 wrestling figures he had to have and were supposed to get pricey......kinda like "cabbage patch" dolls. You know of anyone that's looking for some in good condition Rowdy Roddy Pipers,Hulk Hogans or Jimmy Snukas? I also might have a Miss Elizabeth if you're interested.

Agree, viewing has been declining for sometime. Unfortunately for NFL, the latest decline was self inflicted by players and owners. Now, guessing NFL asking television to not show players kneeling during national anthem is the latest attempt to make this nightmare go away. Guessing once again NFL will find itself in BAV, ( Balls in a Vise ) with the NFL's annual Salute to Services Week / Month approaching.
