I was doImg some genealogy stuff the other day and it's very possible that my great great grandfather was in the 14th cavalry regiment of Virgina out of Greenbrier county.

So no statues for me in the future.

Same tax code. Obamacare still law of the land. Still in Iraq. Still in Afghanistan.

He's reversed a few late term Obama regs. That's winning?

My wife's family had a distant grandfather that actually freed some slaves he inherited, giving them each money and livestock.

The Mason Dixon line is about 300 yds north of the old stone house in my avatar. The bridge in the background is in PA.

our farm is in Proctor near the wetzel county and marshall county line...there is a marker on Rt 2 that the state put up.....inside the plexiglass case is the actuak marker that was moved several hundred feet from our property to the highway for public viewing...we discovered the marker about 40 years ago while squirrel hunting

If you have WV roots, you probably have distant relatives on both sides, some who volunteered and some who were volunteered. That's how my Priddy/Hager/Crandall/Adkins/Plants tree looks during those dark but necessary days.

There is one, in front of the Greenbrier County library in Lewisburg: http://wvhistoryonview.org/catalog/wvulibraries:3862

I have ancestors who fought on both sides. Both of my dad's great-grandfathers were Rebels; his dad's grandfather died in a Union prison camp in Georgia after being exchanged. His mother's grandfather was a Rebel cavalryman from Greenbrier County. My mom's great-grandfather was in the first Union regiment to get to the top of Lookout Mountain. We can't help what our ancestors did, but we don't have to act like the ones who fought against the United States were some kind of heroes on a higher plane. That said, the whole issue of statues is a local affair -- they were put there by local citizens, mostly during the height of Jim Crow to re-emphasize which race called the shots, and if local citizens now vote to remove them, so be it. Those people who tore down the statue in Durham, NC should do jail time and have to pay to have it replaced.

I agree, local issues. Why were folks from the west coast in Charlottesville worrying about a statue there? It seems to be an issue made bigger by the growing sense of insecurity among whites who are hurting and who feel vindicated that Trump won.
