....was sloppily handwritten with a Sharpie on a large paper taped to the drive-thru window of my local Arby's.

Don't do the fast food thing much anymore and Arby's is far down on that list anyway.....but after paying almost $9 for midsize (that was really small) roast beef sandwich, ****** curly fries, and a medium fountain cola it was everything I could do to not openly mock the very polite young lady that handed me my expensive sack of crap.

Why doesn't the owner just put panhandlers outside of each restaurant entrance ?

And these are probably the same millennials that protest for $15/hour. If that happens you can easily add a few more bucks to the $9 you paid. Screw that and all the other fast food restaurants.

Never eat fast food anymore unless it is "emergency" food; you know, gotta have something to eat so I'll eat about anything.

I find it more satisfying to take a little extra time and go into a place with a wait staff that actually gives a ****, spend about the same amount of money (maybe a couple dollars more) and reward with a tip commensurate to the service rendered. It's better for me and the staff.

LOL - Orlaco and his fast food adventures. Remember when I told you to lower your expectations for these places?

Anyways, here's what you should do. Report them to the IRS.

If they are accepting tips, they are required to report them on their yearly filing and I would assume the franchise is required to include some kind of statement that they allow employees to accept cash tips and solicit customers for additional income.

Swing by, take a pic with your smartphone and contact their tip line.

I read an article written by a former McDonald's executive. He said $15/per hour would probably improve fast food chains margins.

Why?

Because they will just cut large amounts of staff and switch to kiosk systems. If you've ever been into a Sheetz, they work just great and it's one less irritating conversation you need to have each day.

There's nothing more irritating than Starbucks drive-through.

When I pull up to the pay window, there's always some 20 year old asking me how my day is going (in an intrusive manner), what I have planned for the rest of the day, ect.

Just give me my coffee and mind your business. I save those conversations for my bartender.

I've been in fast food places where there are tip jars on the counter. So you walk up and order your food and then wait for them to bring it to the counter so you can take it to your table and you're supposed to tip them for that.

I don't like the concept of tipping in general. Just pay them more. If I wanted to determine the worth of an employee I'd start my own small business.

You need to keep some Soylent around. No, it's not people. The link below is a pre-mixed drink, which is about $3 for 400 calories. They have a powder too where you mix up a whole days worth at once and it's cheaper but once you mix it up you have to drink it in a few days or it will go bad. The 400 calorie bottles, OTOH, are sealed and are good indefinitely.

Basically it's cheap, convenient, good nutrition. I don't use it that much but it comes in handy when I do use it. I don't usually eat breakfast but this morning I was really hungry so I grabbed a bottle out of the fridge and drank it on my way to work.

I have friends who now live in Switzerland and, like most of Europe, tipping is not required and in some respects frowned upon. Most just round up to the next amount; bill is 14.35 euro, give them 15 euro.

I asked what these servers make as an hourly wage since there are no or few tips. Minimum wage in Europe ranges from $12.04/hr in Luxembourg to $3.65/hr in Greece (calculated for today's exchange on the Euro). France, Netherlands, UK, Ireland, Belgium and Germany are all in the $9 to $10/hr range.

Switzerland is very expensive, I paid $24 for a cheeseburger and fires in Lucerne last summer. But those are tourist prices, ate at a restaurant on the main canal.

It is very possible that keeping prices low many fast food places would go to an automated system. Whether that improves or declines the impression of food quality is yet to be seen.

I LOVE some of the cities that make a mandatory 15-18% ( or restaurants that do it for groups) tips part of the bill.

Fine, I'll give LESS and GREAT the waiter(s) will now pay full taxes. At a sit down restaurant with an actual (good) waitress I easily tip 25% and for groups where we eat and drink for an extended period up to 50%.

Mandatory tipping really defeats the whole purpose... ....which is encouraging and rewarding good/great service.
