There's no other way to put it, this Press Virginia thing fails in big spots

2 Big XII titles we get run off the floor

Kentucky delivers one of the biggest beat downs in NCAA tournament history

Blowout loss to a 14 seed

Honestly not that upset about this game but it's part of a clear trend, this Press Virginia style fails if anyone buckles down and makes it their business to break our press. Regular season success, sure. Beating some top 20ish teams, ambush KU at home once a year, all well and good but this thing is never going to deliver a title, and getting past the Sweet 16 during this era is probably a huge long shot.

....and cue the "blame" posters. Yeah, this "Press Virginia" thing stinks.......whatever. [thumbsup][pfftt]

Blame? No. The Press Virginia thing also hardly "sucks" but it's becoming an apparent postseason trend that this style does not deliver like it does in the regular season, I suspect that's because coaches don't change their entire day to day routine in order to score a single W on an unorthodoxed style but in a "there's no tomorrow" scenario coaches will go all in to try and break it. The singular good postseason result for this style was the Maryland win.

You do realize that we didn't "Press Virginia" a lot tonight. We went to the 1-3-1 late, like last night. The combo last night resulted in a victory. It didn't tonight. Were you complaining about this last night? Huggs makes adjustments. And you recruit players and fit them in your style. If suddenly you change the philosophy, you are doing yourself and team no good.

Chill......down.......we are fine.

We adjusted twice because two teams broke it. It's not supposed to break, the 1-3-1 is a panic move to spark something not our go to defense. KSU isn't on ISU's level so they left the door opened, we won't face any KSUs in the tournament, including round 1, if we dig a hole we're probably out just like last year. So if you think we're Final Four or better, we best not fall behind by more than 5 for 4 straight games.

Look up the stats. Iowa State is one of the best teams at taking care of the ball. Plus, they are loaded with experienced seniors. We beat them twice this year. Hard to beat a good team three times. Still, we played fine. Not great, but well enough to beat 90% of schools out there. They were hot, and hit a lot of shots in a 20 minute span in the middle of the game. Tip your hat. Move past this, enjoy the next 4 weeks.

We beat their *** 4 in a row, we get them in a championship game and they control a 8-12 point lead for basically the entire 2nd half? Sorry they didn't just hit a special switch, they went balls deep into making sure they didn't get fooled by this press just like our next opponent will do. Without consistent offense in our back pocket we are extremely vulnerable when the press breaks.

Thank you for proving my point of your overreaction. Our style seemed to achieve victories in those 4 in a row.....but now it's "flawed" after one defeat. That's logical. [roll]

My argument is that teams and coaches in the regular season do not prepare for us like they do in the postseason.

The issue IMO is that we are a puzzle. During the regular season teams do not try as hard to "figure it out", but when there is no tomorrow we see entirely different game plans than what we normally see and IMO we are not reacting well to it at all.

Teams like UNC/Kentucky on the other hand, you don't "figure them out" you hope they're cold and you're hot, no questions asked. Our team if you can figure out how to consistently beat our press it's a different story. In a pure half court game we are vulnerable to probably any team in the RPI top 150.

You do realize you are in West Virginia and really you have nothing to be ashamed of?
WVU is well represented on the national level in athletics. It is gonna take a real special player to win any championships but in your current state you are just one recruit away!

WVU always scares the sh!7 out of me when we have to play them. I hate facing your team because they're so good at dictating tempo and making their opponent very uncomfortable.

You're a scary, talented team that I think can make it to the elite 8. After that who knows. It just takes a few good matchup and some favorable bounces. You guys have as good of a chance to kick some butt as any team, and I think you will. I think this is your year to make some noise.

Just a hunch.

No recruit that is capable of backpacking a team to a title is going to choose a team that presses on almost every possession including misses. The dilemma is this IMO

Press Virginia = consistent top 25 teams that will always make the tournament. Ceiling is the Sweet 16

Go back to what we were before = program consistency disappears, risk falling off the map, but upside to play for a title is there.

Daxter Miles Jr. - 4 star recruit according to ESPN
Elijah Macon - was a top 50 player according to ESPN
Esa Ahmad - was a top 50 player according to ESPN
Derek Culver - is a top 100 player according to ESPN

Yeah, what top players in the nation would come here to play for Huggins.........[cheers]

Bottom line on the lose....we cannot make a free throw to save our lives. I about died last night when Ahmed missed the front end of his two shots.

Thanks, and good game. If WVU makes it to the E8 I'll be stunned, we are way too undisciplined and as mentioned above, good teams break our press.

We didn't get 'run off the floor'
ISU was shooting lights out last nite.
It happens. 26-8 is pretty damn good.
Top 12 in country = very good. This style of play has improved our team.
Huggs adjusts when need be. We didn't press all nite. The 1-3-1 isn't a desperate defense. It works well in spots.
As Huggins said at halftime- 'why do we (they) insist on doing the things we're not good at'?
We were jacking too many 3s instead of pounding inside.

We adjusted twice because of foul trouble. Watch the game and quit bitching.

You mean we lost a close game to a team that is playing as well as anyone in the nation, has lost only 1 game in the last 10 (to us), and is playing in front of their home crowd??? Shocking!

No system in WVU athletic history has delivered a title. However, this particular one has given us back to back Top 15 seasons, wins over #1 ranked teams, back to back conference tournament championship appearances, and a Sweet 16 run.

You do realize that by conference tournament time, teams are seeing the press for the third time? Other teams are not dumb. They watch film. They learn and adjust.

We had our B and C game and still almost won the thing. If we can put a complete game together, this team can make the final 4.

Like I said, lets see this team prove me wrong. IMO when facing a highly motivated team, our press is attacked differently than in the regular season and we get exposed as a mediocre halfcourt team. You can disagree all you want, Im not claiming to be able to see the future, were gonna see the 3rd Press Virginia NCAA tournament in a few days and more light will be shed on whether or not last year was a fluke.
