Not surprising. Also not surprising is the response from the wingnuts. It is all shameful.

His actual quote:
“That’s what America is about, a land of dreams and opportunity,’’ he said. “There were other immigrants who came here in the bottom of slave ships, worked even longer, even harder for less. But they too had a dream that one day their sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, great-grandsons, great-granddaughters, might pursue prosperity and happiness in this land.”

Without the partisan goggles on you can understand the point he was trying to make. That even slaves had hopes and dreams for the chance of opportunity one day.

Yes, he was trying to make a point that was not delivered in the manner that he actually spoke. For god's sake, quit spinning for a second. His comments were outlandish, foolish, horrible and factually incorrect. He tried to clean it up later in a Facebook post as reported this morning. But you look absolutely ridiculous attempting to support the notion that slaves and immigrants coming to this country had the same dreams. Quit it.

Dr. Ben Carson is the World's foremost Pediatric Neurosurgeon and there are some racists on this board who think he's stupid.

Unreal.

Immigrants that came here to pursue their hopes and dreams.

And this guy was a GOP presidential candidate.

You don't think slaves had dreams of Freedom countryroads89? True they didn't come here voluntarily...they were forced here but couldn't you argue any immigrants fleeing oppression, poverty, famine, or War were also 'forced' here even involuntarily?

Are you insinuating he was an unqualified GOP Presidential candidate or are you insinuating he was too stupid to be one?

Good comeback Potts, I'll go with Samuel Jacksons response then, lol.
The guy is an idiot with anger issues and butthurt. Pure stupidity comes out from him constantly. The day it doesn't, that will be news.

Yes to both.

“A lot of people who go into prison straight, and when they come out they’re gay.”

“My own personal theory is that Joseph built the pyramids to store grain. Now all the archeologists think that they were made for the pharaohs’ graves. But, you know, it would have to be something awfully big if you stop and think about it. And I don’t think it’d just disappear over the course of time to store that much grain.”

“Well, that’s easy to answer: I didn’t have an involvement with them [Mannatech]. That is total propaganda. And this is what happens in our society — total propaganda. I did a couple speeches for them. I did speeches for other people. They were paid speeches. It is absolutely absurd to say that I had any kind of relationship with them. Do I take the product? Yes. I think it’s a good product.”

“The pledge of allegiance to our flag says we are one nation under God. Many courtrooms in the land on the wall it says ‘In God We Trust.’ Every coin in our pocket, every bill in our wallet says ‘In God We Trust.’ So if it’s in our founding documents, it’s in our pledges, in our courts and it’s on our money, but we’re not supposed to talk about it, what in the world is that? In medicine it’s called schizophrenia and I, for one, am simply not willing to kick God to the curb.”

“But it is true that we are probably giving way too (vaccines) many in too short a period of time. And a lot of pediatricians now recognize that, and I think are cutting down on the number and the proximity in which those are done, and I think that’s appropriate.”

“I do not remember this level of scrutiny for one President Barack Obama when he was running for president. In fact, I remember just the opposite. I remember saying, ‘O-o-oh, we won’t really talk about that.’ Why are you guys not interested in why his records are sealed? Can somebody tell me why?”

Well countryroads89 since what you've posted here is all your proof of his stupidity or his unqualified status to run for President can you tell me the first incision you would recommend he follow to remove your brain?

Ben Carson is the World's pre-emminent pediatric neurosurgeon so I'm sure he would appreciate your childish expertise guiding him to perform your much needed lobotomy?

(or maybe you've already had one as evidenced by your nonsensical post?)

Pediatric neurosurgeons concentrate on the special surgical problems of children involving the brain, spine or peripheral nerves.

And don't forget the thousands who came here from England as indentured servants, who were white. They had the same dream, work off their debt, whatever it may be, and start a new life.

We banned indentured servitude early on, but only for white people. Funny how equality wasn't equal back then.

Nevertheless, immigration is still part of the "American Dream " across the globe.

IMO, getting the illegals out would hurt the economy. Who is going to take those agriculture jobs that Americans already refuse to take? The "illegal" immigrants pay more taxes than Trump does

Thanks for bringing that up, Pat. That is how my family arrived at the "New World". Really appreciate that the old folks decided to make the best of the reality they were in and worked hard to buy their freedom. After that we were to able to see the advantages presented and took advantage to move forward. Thanks to all involved along the way ,but can easily see how we can show resentment that we didn't all apply ourselves to attain what brother Ben. Take my hat off to the man for seeking and attaining greatness.

In a speech at a naturalization ceremony in 2012, then-President Obama said this about slave ships:

"We say it so often, we sometimes forget what it means — we are a nation of immigrants. Unless you are one of the first Americans, a Native American, we are all descended from folks who came from someplace else — whether they arrived on the Mayflower or on a slave ship, whether they came through Ellis Island or crossed the Rio Grande."

While addressing a crowd at the National Archives and Records Administration in 2015, Obama said this:

"So life in America was not always easy. It wasn't always easy for new immigrants. Certainly, it wasn't easy for those of African heritage who had not come here voluntarily and yet in their own way were immigrants themselves. There was discrimination and hardship and poverty. But, like you, they no doubt found inspiration in all those who had come before them. And they were able to muster faith that, here in America, they might build a better life and give their children something more."

I'm not surprised that this part went right over your head.

Immigrants that came here to pursue their hopes and dreams.

And this guy was a GOP presidential candidate.

Yeah, he said African American slaves came here to pursue their hopes and dreams.

You know exactly what Carson meant. I didn't think you were soooo naive. You folks are the masters of taking some poor wording choices and twisting them to fit your narrative. Aren't you the one always talking about "context"?

Context?

How in the hell can you make taking a slave from Africa against his will, to be treated like property and not a human being, to another country to be beaten, whipped and made to work hard labor for nothing but the essentials (food, water, clothing and a roof over your their head) fit "pursuing their hopes and dreams?"

In the context of "immigrants"........you dummy. I already said he used poor judgement in wording.
