Now maybe the Football Playoff Pretzel committee will pick the 4 best teams and not dip into 3rd place to get Ohio State in the playoffs. We can only hope.

The 2017 New Year’s Day national playoff ratings were down 35% from the 2014 New Year’s Day national playoff ratings!

Clemson vs. Ohio State got a 10.0 rating compared to 15.3 in 2014.

Alabama vs. Washington got 10.9 compared to 15.5 in 2014.

Comparing a New Year's Day ratings to 2016 New Year’s Eve is apples to oranges. That's why ESPN switched from Eve to Day after the calamity last year. Comparing it to 2014 is both New Year’s Day playoffs. So the playoffs two years in a row are doing worse than in 2014. Hmmnn. Someone didn't get it right.

ESPN has a lot at stake. It cut a $5.64 billion, 12-year deal to televise the four-team playoff in 2012. With the hemmoraging of subscribers, ESPN is in double jeopardy.

It would have been nice to have the Mountaineers make the Top 4. They would have played Clem(p)son a better game than Ohio State managed!

This year's playoffs were on New Year's Eve. Today is January 1, 2017. Yesterday was December 31, 2016.

Imagine how low the ratings would have been if they made the mistake of putting Penn St or Oklahoma in the playoffs

The playoffs have only been around for 3 years. Not enough time for fans to get tired of teams. Plus, the ratings were actually up slightly from last year.

Your theory falls flat (like always) when you realize that this season's B10 championship game drew less viewers than 2015's matchup of Iowa and Michigan St. by half a million viewers

Ratings are down in NFL, and now college playoffs.....tells me that perhaps we might be seeing a shift away from football just a bit? It happens.......I don't think it had much to do with who was playing.

OP you're comparing to 2014 when the playoffs were on NYD. Last year established that the CFP on NYE is a bad idea, so not sure what your point is? If they were on NYD they would have crushed the ratings

Next year they will be on New Year's Day and they the comparison will be apples to apples. And for the near future you will be seeing the same teams - they are the blue bloods and that will continue until there are coaching changes or scandals.

New Years Eve vs New Years Day - no contest there. We will see what next year brings. And in the years following the semifinals will usually be on a Saturday - not New Years Eve.

Keep in mind the games are on ESPN. My satellite costs over $100 a month and I don't get one ESPN channel. That's great for ratings.

Sports in general are losing popularity.
