I'm not so sure. Tough when a conference champion that beat a team in the playoff doesn't get in. Two power 5 conference champions sitting at home???

Don't lose to lessers like Pitt and Houston.

Don't get blown out by 30+ points
I hear you, but we are just going to go back to setting up cupcakes no conference then. I like stiffer matchups though, and there is something's no to be said for a team closing hot isn't there?

Schedules are made years in advance. Moreover, scheduling and winning against a top OOC school may help pave the way for a playoff berth, as Ohio State's romp over Oklahoma in Norman has done this season.

i agree with that, but not winning your own conference championship has got to count against you

The only way to say any committee for selection got something right is if they establish criteria before the season that takes interpretation out of it, let the season play out, and get out of the way except for the trophy presentation.

This college football selection is about TV, ratings, and $$$$. That's why they have TV shows weekly during the season to pretend there is a magical process. It too is about TV ratings, interest, and keeping it in the news.

Only real way to do it and even resemble fairness is take 5 conference champions from P5 (how ever that conference determines it) and the #1 seated school gets a bye while 4 seed plays 5 seed at the 4 seeds place. Then start playoffs in the ridiculous archaic money grab bowl system.

I guess you could add 1 at large and go with 6 spots where 6 plays at 3 and 5 plays at 4. And then go to the ridiculous archaic money grab bowl system.

This playoff committee like NCAA basketball committee is about TV and $$$$$. They make up their own vague rules that change constantly so they don't lose control.

This season:

1 school was in no question-BAMA. They won their conference, lost to no one and dominated. They played a respectable ooc, though not great.

1 school was not getting left out because they were feasible and best from the pacific time zone-Washington. Last year no school from pacific time zone and the tv ratings represented that. Btw the OOC schedule for Washington in 16 makes Baylor and TCU in 14 look like a murderers row.

1 school is a TV draw-Ohio State who didn't even win their division in their conference. Throws out how important those CCG are and that 13th data point which was the talk in the first 2 years.

1 school is a coastal team-Clemson that won its conference and has star power which is good for TV.

TV runs this thing. They want brands for ratings cause espn paid waaaaaay too much for this without them. Same as the ncaa basketball tourney-ratings for championship when under dogs like Butler and even Memphis are in it are loooooow.

Espn can't afford that given what they have invested in the football playoff.

I'm not an old guy, and I love the bowl system. It allows student athletes in a hard sport to finish the season as champions. The bowls used to be about the community and region of the game (events, parades, etc...that celebrated different regions of the country and what made them unique). It would be nice to get back to the purity of the bowl season.

It does, and was the primary reason that an 11-1 Ohio State team that had won the National Championship the season before was left out last season. The difference is that this season, there was not another one-loss team to take Ohio State's place. Two losses keeps you out every season thus far.

OSU doesn't even win their division let alone their conference. PSU wins head to head match up, east division and conference championship yet miss out on play offs.
Teams screwed over by the committee...
2014 - TCU
2016 - PSU

I agree good for the players as a reward, but let's be real there's too many of them when sub 500 schools are going.

I could Say the games are beneficial to the communities, but according to espn-OTL and HBO-Real Sports, the people really benefitting are the committees that put the bowl games on. You rememver the fiesta bowl WVU played you guys in? The guy who presented WVU with the trophy went to jail for embezzling and improper use of fund$-including I think on strippers & prostitutes. Most of the games don't give that much tax exempt $$$$$ to the communities either. Those exposes were revealing.

If they would make bowl tickets half way reasonable in cost attendance would rise. Most tickets don't sell cause you can show up and buy scalped for much cheaper. Also the crap of the patches is a joke too. I quit buying the patches cause I never saw any realization of savings in those places. I don't know how many gator Bowl patches I bought before I said not again.

All great points. All things I'd love to see eradicated. Our government is full of corruption and is $$$$ driven as well, but I don't want to give up on Democracy.....just fix it.

In this thread...... someone tried to equalize a New Years 6 bowl with a random bowl game

Seriously if you think those two games are remotely equal, try harder at the football

So because the Rose Bowl committee selects USC, that automatically makes them a top 8 team?

And you think a top 8 team loses to the 18th ranked team by 17 points and loses to the 18th ranked team.

You are a moron.

PSU should have been in and Washington out. PSU won their conference and beat OSU another team worthy enough to cause a lot of tv sets to turn on and tune in. The reason that Washington made it was because they were the only team west of the Mississippi that had a pulse and the playoff people need to sell lots of beer and potato chips to keep the cash coming in. They got it 3/4s right and I HATE PSU.

Totally agree. My only complaint is the lack of the ability to play into the playoffs. I really wish the model was like the NCAA Tournament. If you do not have the superior athletes you will not make the playoff unless you go undefeated. I feel like Washington was in this situation just given the fact there was long debate on whether they should be in or not. Just bump it up to 8 teams and all will be good in the world of College Football. Make if 5 conference Champions and 3 at large teams.

Washington lost one game.......... to a top 10 team in USC......... PSU lost to Pitt and got blown out by Michigan

Washington beat 3 ranked teams: Utah, Colorado, Stanford

Penn State beat 3 ranked teams: tOSU, Temple, Wisconsin

It comes down the L's.......... plain and simple.

If Ohio State was named Illinois or Minnesota, they would have been kicked out and Penn State would have gotten the bid.

I think the Buckeyes are a good team, but they always get the benefit of the doubt in these situations. Something is not right when you are better off not playing in your conference championship game while everyone else risks the injuries, etc.

They need a set criteria for selecting these teams, not a group of men deciding who they think the "best" teams are by an unknown criteria that seems to change depending on who the teams in the mix are.

it's not the SATs......... the idea of a "set of rules" for selection takes away the fact that each season, and the events that unfold, are independent of the previous and all prior seasons.....

Human analysis of all aspects of each team's season is 100% necessary.

I agree. That's why we need an eight-team playoff. Five P5 conference champs, top G5 team if a conference champ and ranked in the top 15, and 2 more at large.

Financially, they'll never go to 8. That means the lower-down bowls then have to take more 5-7 teams to fill the vacancies.

6 at the most, with 1 and 2 sitting out round 1.

They are already adding bowls each year. We are up to 41 now. They are already taking 5-7 teams.

The system is broken. There is some type of controversy every year.

You're right about the lower bowls, but they are already just followers. The NY6 and the P5 conferences are in control. It would mean more money for them.

or play a cupcake instead of at Pitt (in Penn State's case) or OSU (n Okie's case) and get in
There is a reason the Big 12 Commish wants an explanation on how the Committee evaluates teams

So conference championships don't matter anymore. Apparently neither does head to head games.

Having two losses when no school with two losses has been invited to the Playoffs matters a lot. So does getting blasted by 39 points in one of your losses. Being the only school to beat three of the eight top schools matters, too.

Stop being so simple before natural selection takes you out................ you take conference titles, head to heads, schedule strength, OOC opponents, and overall record and put ALL OF IT in a box.............. and then you evaluate from there

Multiple Data Points.............. That's why the selection was perfect this year.

12-1 Ohio State was invited to the CFP instead of 11-1 TCU, after having dismantled Wisconsin by the score of 59-0, then proceeded to beat Alabama in the semi-final and Oregon in the National Championship Game. So, the Committee was wrong then, too?

NO - setting things up so it is clear what it takes to get into the playoffs is 100% necessary. Just like EVERY OTHER football league in America

They already have a playoff system. The conference championship winners should fold into the four team playoff. We were told this new system would let decisions be made on the field. I agree that we got the 4 correct teams this year but to me it opened up the door for asking the question of why TCU did not get in 2014. If the committee wanted the four best teams TCU should have been in the CFP. TCU smashing a real good Ole Miss team that year to finish with just one lost and number 2 in the Sagarin ratings.
