Let’s have an unbiased statistical formula tell us where WVU’s Skyler Howard ranks among quarterbacks:

20th

Louisville’s Lamar Jackson, the Heisman favorite, is 18th. Does that make sense?

So more than statistics should enter into it.

Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield is #1 statistically. Four Big 12 QBs are in the top 20.

Toledo and Western Michigan are #2 and #3 but they don’t count because of the competition level. Seven QBs in the top 20 are NOT playing against Power 5 teams.

Therein lies the problem.

How can you judge Skyler against Clemson’s Deshaun Watson (#16) when they don’t play the same teams? You can’t. You just give your eyeball test opinion, like everyone else.

Statistics are misleading. Eyeball guesses are misleading. But it makes the wheel keep turning as fans compare quarterbacks.

And then there's trying to determine where Skyler ranks among WVU QBs. Again, different eras, different competition. Apples and oranges.

Pat White, Major Harris, Marc Bulger, Jeff Hofstetler, Fred Wyant did some remarkable things. So has Skyler. But his inconsistency has been maddening.

Your ranking for Skyler, among this year's college QBs or among WVU QBs all-time, is just as legitimate as mine, or some talking-head expert. Go for it!

Here's my ranking. Skyler has done a good job for us this year. What he lacks in talent, he more than makes-up for in effort and toughness.

I don't know if he makes it at the next level, but I certainly wish him the best of luck.

Agree with you here. While I love Skyler, there aren't many top teams in power five conference's that he would be playing on.

I still stand by my belief that if we have a very good QB this year we have one loss at the most. An elite QB we might be undefeated.
