Grand National is out of the price range. I love that place. But fall golf is very expensive and if Auburn is playing at home during the weekend, that place is booked way in advance. I'm going with guys I work with and price is an issue with two of them. One of the guys has a condo in Panama City and that is usually our go to but he has rented it that weekend already. You aren't that far from Auburn and the Grand National course. Where are your buddies from?
I see racist neil has found a way to be an ******* with even the most benign question. Kudos neil! I can't remember the brand of hitting mat that I have but it is very realistic imitation of actual turf. The mat that I have is only about 1' x 1/1/2' with a separate mat to stand on. I think the hitting mat was about $140 new. I hit balls in the winter in my garage into a portable net that sets up in about 30 seconds and puts away in about 1 minute. It's a Rukket brand and is the best one I've ever seen.RPJ, I know I asked this question a long while back, but can't remember the answer. Any recommendations on hitting mats? I have a net that was given to my son and now need to set up a hitting mat. I think the recommendation was to not go cheap.
My son made the high school golf team as freshman and started a bunch of matches as the 5/6 player. Anyway, that taste of success has him wanting to secure his spot next year and climb the team rankings. Thought the net and mat might be a good way to get him reps in the winter when it might be tough to get to the range.
Doesn't your club have a heated learning center? We have a three bay one and we hit to the outside.I see racist neil has found a way to be an ******* with even the most benign question. Kudos neil! Unfortunately, we do not.Doesn't your club have a heated learning center? We have a three bay one and we hit to the outside.
I'm playing Southern Hills in a couple weeks when I go out for the OSU game. Anything on your agenda?Doesn't your club have a heated learning center? We have a three bay one and we hit to the outside.

I rarely play it from the tips anymore. I try to play somewhere between 6700-6900 on most courses. I like to hit irons occasionally instead of hybrids into par 4s.I'm going to Myrtle Beach tomorrow to play in the Wacchassau two man invitational. Last tournament of the year. Three days. Last I heard, 18 green was half submerged so we may have to finish on another hole. You going to play Southern all the way back?[banana]
Two of my buddies (both WVU alums) left this morning for a golf trip to Myrtle. Myrtle courses were in great condition late August when I was there. I've heard conflicting reports of damage in Myrtle. Hilton Head took some major damage.I'm going to Myrtle Beach tomorrow to play in the Wacchassau two man invitational. Last tournament of the year. Ours is the dave Lamanca learning center and he was killed in the US Air flight that crashed near Pittsburg. My last assistant was living in Pittsburg and she heard the plane hit and saw the smoke.Unfortunately, we do not.
At our age, 6800 is a good distance. Although, I'm probably 10 years older. I just turned 62 last Saturday.I rarely play it from the tips anymore. I try to play somewhere between 6700-6900 on most courses. I like to hit irons occasionally instead of hybrids into par 4s.![]()
Metal? My first set of woods were all persimmon, including 2. Damn, they were sharp when they were cleaned and polished. Irons included a 2. Sam had a couple remarks about 2 iron, but nearly everyone did.
I still have two Toney Penna drivers and a 3 wood. They are beautiful. I may have to take them to the range sometime just for fun.Perhaps the single best looking set of woods I ever saw was that owned by a work pal; a set of Palmer Peerless-model persimmons from the early-80's.
They had a kind-of chestnut finish, green with gold-screwed faces, black score lines, and gold sole plates. An absolutely stunning set of sticks......Toney Penna made some beautiful woods in those days (though mostly before that) as well.

Damn! Nice 9. I've shot 30 a couple times but it's been a long time. I'll need strokes if we ever play. :smiley:Be careful, the balls are so hard that it may break the wood. I went out and played last night and had my best 9 holes of golf this year. I shot 30, par 35, with a chance at 29. Crazy game, my back has been bothering me for 3 months but now seems to be ok and the tournament season is over.

One of the times that I shot 30 was during a club championship match. I was 4 down after 9 and shot 30 on the back to win the match. I always played some of my best golf during match play when I wasn't focused on score-but on each shot and each hole. I played Scott Stallings once in a club championship match and had one of my best scores in a long time . He beat me 2 & 1 which was pretty good since he closed everyone else out at 14 or before that year when he went on to win.Why couldn't that happen in a real tournament. I've had some good rounds, though. I got off to a food start in the second round of the senior open birding 3 of the first 4 but couldn't sustain it. Shot 1 over that day.
it puts green stuff on the bottom of your irons..that's all I have to offer. Now, there's an exceptionally useful answer to a very specific question; let's see if I read it right......
Q: What can anyone recommend about golf mats ??
A: Use old clubs
To quote a comment from another thread today: actually that is hilarious.......
Prepare for a verbal *** kicking from this group....... .it puts green stuff on the bottom of your irons..that's all I have to offer.
