Golfers - Question hitting mats

RPJ, I know I asked this question a long while back, but can't remember the answer. Any recommendations on hitting mats? I have a net that was given to my son and now need to set up a hitting mat. I think the recommendation was to not go cheap.

My son made the high school golf team as freshman and started a bunch of matches as the 5/6 player. Anyway, that taste of success has him wanting to secure his spot next year and climb the team rankings. Thought the net and mat might be a good way to get him reps in the winter when it might be tough to get to the range.

Might want to consider using an older set of clubs.

Now, there's an exceptionally useful answer to a very specific question; let's see if I read it right......

Q: What can anyone recommend about golf mats ??
A: Use old clubs

To quote a comment from another thread today: actually that is hilarious.......

I gave up on mats and just started using sand since that's from where I usually hit. Surf's Up!

I'm assuming you are talking about practicing in the winter time? I would be careful to not overdue it. Do you access to an indoor practice facility? Are you a member of a club that has a practice facility that's open when the weather permits? Practicing outside is still best. I practice inside our facility, hit through open doors, but it's different than standing on mother earth and hitting. Mats give a false sense of being better than you are.

I am talking about winter practicing. I do not have access to an indoor facility. I am a member of a club that has outdoor practice area when weather permits. I don't want him to over do it either, but I thought it might be a nice way for him to hit balls when we can't make it to the club. If I do this it will have to be set up outside.

No garage? That's the way to go if you can rig it up with a space heater. Do not over do it as the hard surface can cause wrist problems.

No garage. Was thinking about setting up a concrete or packed sand pad to put the mat on outside. Thought he could use it some when he gets home from school.

It's been awhile since you called me an *******; if you don't mind, I'll consider myself so covered through the end of the month. Meanwhile.....and speaking of old golf clubs and ********.....I've got an old set of sticks available for you to jam up your own *******.

Just be careful you don't ram the 3 iron smack into your brain when you insert it.......

The mats that we hit off of now don't cause any problems with the clubs. Although, as bad as Obama's economy is, wearing out golf clubs and buying one new set every 4 years might improve the economy more than anything he's done.[cheers]

What's the purpose of this?
With approximately 60 years of experience, I have mistakenly had 1 or 2 "fat" hits. To protect my play clubs, I have used an old set of clubs to practice different things when hitting from a hard surface.

I certainly see no benefit to be gained from the substitution by the scratch golfer who has a perfectly grooved swing. Maybe this winter I can improve, but would still have a hesitation when practicing hitting down on irons. I have twisted the face a little on my practice clubs and don't even throw them on a poor hit.

What brand?
Had to look on club. Yonex was the recommended club by one of the golf magazines for me at my age and swing pattern when approaching retirement. One of my old foursome used that brand, and he had nothing against it. I had used Titleist for years, and it was not the highest recommendation, so I switched.

Yonex? Wasn't Bill in his first term when you bought those? [roll]

I got the M2 around the middle of July and it has been a big difference. My playing partners have commented about how far I've been hitting it. I know that my ability is different but some of the new technology coupled with the new balls is amazing.

That is a very true statement but only if one is a low index golfer, which most are not.

No, but I have proof they are a good set. I have had them all these years and don't have a mark on them. Shine is still there and not a blemish. No hint of a bag mark.

Had to look up your clubs also. I have been out too long. Is your set of clubs legal? I remember when you could not rely on technology to fix your game. I couldn't hit Driver as far as these guys hit 7. I probably never got more than 250, and that would be wind aided with a bit of a draw to run. Normally planned on 230 with full swing.

Went out with son-in-law a month or so back. He is full size and flat belly. One shot I suggested he lay up or hit right to the fairway and avoid water. He took 7 and ended up about 10 yards short. What the hell do these big hitters waste the money on a full set of clubs for? They only need Driver, 7 and putter. I started with Slam Sam instruction book in beginning. He suggested 5 for 150 yds. Up or down club for each 10-15 yard intervals.

There's a good story about someone asked Sam how to make a three iron back up? Sam asked him how far he hit his three iron? The person said 150 yards. Sam asked him why he would want it to back up! If you asked my if my clubs are legal, yes they are. I played in the 2012 US senior Open and had to get a set that was groove legal to qualify and then to play. Since then, everything I bought is legal. By rule, anything with a loft under 25* can have square grooves, 4 iron-2iron and hybrids, fairway metals excetera. The 5-lob has to have V grooves. If you are playing for fun, I don't think there's anything yet that pertains to grooves that would mean you are breaking the rules.

M2 driver, 3 metal and 5 metal. I play AP1 irons and ping wedges and Titliest hybrids.

Sam was a very quick wit. The little paperback I had would make you roll with some of his stuff. He was rumored to be very stern in his talk Some even took him to be a cantankerous old bastard. A friend had the pleasure/displeasure of sitting by him on a plane ride. Never heard a friendly word for the entire flight. Didn't have much good to say about him thereafter.

Love my AP2's. Have you compared the two? What took you to the AP1's ?

I like the brush look of the AP1 and not the polished look of the AP2. Just my preference. I've done pretty good here recently and have almost a grand in gift certificates to spend so I'm probably going to try the M2 19* hybrid and maybe get a 60* glide ping sedge WS. Plus new Hyperflex shoes.

Metal? My first set of woods were all persimmon, including 2. Damn, they were sharp when they were cleaned and polished. Irons included a 2. Sam had a couple remarks about 2 iron, but nearly everyone did.

My friend had a first edition instruction book of his from maybe the 30's and sam tried to buy it but my friend wouldn't let him. He did get Sam to autograph it.

My real first set was Toney Penna persimmon woods and forged irons. Still have them. Got to go play nine and take some money from my friend.

Excellent. I'm pretty set on my equipment at the moment so thankfully there isn't anything I need or want at the moment.

Been trying to find an economical place to go for Veterans Day weekend coming up as we have the day off as a holiday. Can't find anything. Sure wish the industry would quit focusing on getting the "premium" dollar and look to build the game by being more affordable.

The santee cooper Reservoirs, where all the stripers came from, is around the Columbia area. I see them running ads in magazines.

Type in golf santee. My son plays there some. There's a pretty good special going on right now.
