so ole miss has beaten Wofford, Georgia, and Memphis and they are 3-3 and still ranked. I guess playing Alabama close is worth more than actually winning games.

Polls are a joke. ESPN has a contract with the SEC and its in their best interest
( $$$$$$$ ) to push the SEC narrative.

Here's the thing. The media only have so much space in which they can present their coverage. If you are expected to be hot .... you'll get coverage. Or if you get hot while other teams cool off you'll start getting coverage.

It's not like the national media has a vendetta against WV. The actual Big 12 media picked WV to finish 7th in their preseason poll. Get it? The in conference media did rank the Mountaineers that high in the preseason.

Personally .... I'm enjoying the 5-0 start. The media attention is nice. But we still got a long way to go before we get too excited. We can go up. Or we could go way down.

The very same media that people blast for not respecting WV are the very same media who can whip you into being today's hot story and do it in a way that overstates things.

...and that, sir, is a well stated dead-bang fact....

Why pretend the 'no respect' banter is a myth that deserves sarcastic treatment? Every article you posted references that WVU has been given zero respect, yet somehow you seem to think WVU fans deserve mocking for the mere mention of it. Give it a rest.

"At some point, it's OK to admit that West Virginia might be good."

My. my. my ..... touchy, aren't we?

Agreed .... they might be good. And since they might be good they also might not be so good. So take the sudden attention with a grain of salt.

I like our chances for at least 8 wins. Each one above that will only make the season that much more special.

But the fickle nature of our fans is always fair game.

And Georgia LOST to Vandy.....so that Georgia win isn't very impressive......

This post right here! So sick of people coming here to chastise other fans because we call out the obvious bias in the polls. Hell all of the national media stories since the win Saturday have mentioned the lack of respect WVU has gotten and if we say it we are being touchy.

Take that ******** some where else. There is always a narrative being pushed, always.

Miss ST still being ranked at 3-3 is utter horseshit. Baylor being ranked in the top ten over us when we have a much better OOC schedule is also utter ********.

You guys act like that since there was not early respect for the Mountaineers, and now there is an admission that WVU wasn't respected, that the media had previously gone out of its way to disrespect WVU.

That is simply not true .... talk about creating a narrative. Sheesh!

Let me give you hint about the future: If we win we'll continue to garner respect. And if we lose the respect will go down. Just want you to be prepared.

ESPN is always biased toward producing stories. Remember that and you will do well.

There is some bias in the polls but let's keep things in perspective. At the beginning of the season, no one, including ourselves (our own fans) expected a great year from us. We were predicting anywhere from 6-6 to 9-3. We are 5-0. That means there is still 7 games to be played. We just need to keep winning and the polls will take care of themselves.

And the opportunity to go 6-6 still exists. Let's hope the team takes the "One game at a time" attitude.

Meh... I have pretty much not cared what ESPN thought of us, or what they thought of our chances were, since just prior to the Sugar Bowl in early 2006. They can say or not say what they want about us. We keep winning and that will take care of itself. Otherwise, it's a practice in futility to get worked up about a sports network that is losing more clout with each passing year.

That's not true. I expected a good year. I even had my eye on the B12 Championship and an undefeated season. I have just as much right to predict that as the pollsters who annually anoint their darlings without so much as the first Spring practice.

We're NOT going 6-6. Have you paid attention at all this year?

99% wins: Kansas

75% wins: Iowa State

50% or below: Texas (will be difficult; but should be capable of winning)
OK State (see Tex above)
OU (COULD be a great atmosphere)
TCU (See OU above)
Baylor (WHOA....the "what if" scenario exists....IF both remain perfect, how great would this be? De facto Big 12 championship game)

So, I'd say there is still a chance that we go 6-6. A 7-5 record appears to be the worst, however. I think with this start anything less than 9-3 would be a disappointment.

Good for you. But the in-conference XII media picked us to place 7th in the conference. And that was mostly based on us losing A LOT from the defense. My guess is that as confident as you may have been about a win this past Saturday that you were expecting to make just enough stops for us to outscore the Raiders and not pummel them with our defense.

Get it? That game was actually the only first really noteworthy thing we have done ... our defense pummeled the leading offense in the nation in their own house. That is an accomplishment. But we'll have to see how the rest of the season plays out before we understand how significant it was.

Those who love to think WVU is always treated fairly and gets what it earns are typically oblivious to how much is given to favored schools who HAVE NOT EARNED IT.

Could WVU have 2 losses -- including one by 43 to a one-loss, #7 team that is lucky to beat Duke...and be ranked in the Top 12-13? I think not.

WVU has won 10 of 11, with ONE road loss by ONE POINT to a coaching legend preventing an 11-0 run.

One of those wins was over Texas by 18 points, which was vaulted into playoff discussion and the rankings for barely edging a 2-5 Notre Dame team in its opener.

REALLY -WHAT PART OF BIAS DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND???

Oh THANK YOU, ESPN for mentioning WVU's name and putting it a few spots above 3-3 Mississippi!

Even Joey Galloway could not resist mocking WVU on College Football final... "West Virginia...and DEFENSE....mentioned in the same sentence?? Ha ha!" He had to be scolded for his condescending ridicule by another talking head....'C'mon now Joey, give 'em some love." WVU was treated as a joke.

Obviously you missed the golden era of Corso-Herbstreit WVU dissing, even when WVU was supposedly good. It is all driven by money, and typically it pays more to shortchange less lucrative and populous markets and teams with fewer fans. Remember OSU jumping Baylor and TCU despite its loss to a bad VT team?

Anyone who defends Big East destroyer ESPN needs to study up.

The basketball schools destroyed the Big East .... not ESPN. ESPN took advantage of the situation. But it was the basketball schools who messed up Big East football. Anyone who doesn't know that needs to study up.

....I'm with you there....every year, no matter who we lost to graduation/NFL/etc.....I always predict an undefeated season!..is it realistic?...maybe not every year, but hope springs eternal!....and if I want reality, I just walk out the front door....

I studied. You may choose not to remember that TCU joined the Big East, which would allow 4 home/away games and improve competition and credibility. WVU (3) and Louisville (1) had won 4 BCS games since 2005 -- whereas the ACC had gone 1-13. The Big 12 was imploding, with Texas, OU + 2 reportedly headed for the PAC. The Big East ESPN contract was up for renegotiation. It had the best basketball conglomeration in history and renewed football bargaining power/credibility and a new market. Schools such as Baylor, Iowa State and even Kansas feared for their existence, and there was talk of adding those and other B12 schools to the Big East - its future never looked better!

STOP!

Who stepped in?

Voilá!

ESPN chooses/owns the ACC and placates Texas with the LHN!

Syracuse and Pitt desert under cover of darkness!

Remember in 2004 when the BC A.D. made the gaffe of saying "we just did what ESPN TOLD US TO DO!"

Hush, Gene! Hush!

There is your ESPN lesson.

The basketball schools screwed the pooch and ESPN took advantage of it. But it's clear that you want to place full blame on ESPN and that you will continue to cast ESPN as the sole devil in that scenario.

The Big East, because of its basketball origins never did quite understand the needs of a football conference .... some of the football schools knew that and ESPN knew that and both entities (football schools and ESPN) did not wait for the BE to wizen up. John Marinatto was down right delusional near the end and Ollie and Jim Clement wisely said we gotta do what we gotta do to get out of this mess. Too many other football schools had already flown the coup because of the blinders the basketball schools wore.

Here's an interesting take on things:
"The Big East always lacked the football culture of nearly everywhere else in the country. Its leaders grew up looking down their noses at the schools that would eventually cannibalize the conference."

You can find those comments in this piece ...

So you finally agree that ESPN is little more than a greedy predator that will seize upon every advantage that may be presented -- which is a conflict of interest in that it uses its bully pulpit to promote or disparage teams as its pecuniary interests dictate.

You have learned well.
