Ben Shapiro Trump could have totally used this situation to his advantage. Maybe he still can, but the opportunity is about to fade if not disappear all together. He could do something his opponent has trouble with: apologizing. He could show deep regret for his comments and state the reasons (our common enemy that killed Khan's son, etc) behind his hurtful remarks, then bow from the ankles and call it a day. This would be a non-issue if Trump would have responded in a better way. He could have easily thanked the son for his service and express regret to the family for their loss. You can easily add a point about disagreeing with their choice for President respectfully. When you start saying things about how they don't have a right to offer their opinions, question whether the mother was allowed to speak after she gave an interview on national tv, etc, you are setting yourself up for failure.
Maybe I'm wrong. I never expected Trump to be as successful as he has been so far. This cycle seems to be breaking all of the norms. I don't care for how Trump has responded though.
Honestly, I think the ship has sailed on this particular issue. He's dug in too deep to reverse course now. I doubt that he has any intentions of backing down or apologizing though. I've yet to see it in any other incident.Trump could have totally used this situation to his advantage. Maybe he still can, but the opportunity is about to fade if not disappear all together. Wow -- I didn't realize that Captain Khan was killed somewhere in America by an unvetted Syrian immigrant.Ben Shapiro

But it impacts many who COULD vote for him. I think it's a mistake. He doesn't have to. This doesn't impact those that will vote for him.
