My company built our office buildings last year so it is very modern and "green" as that is a company value. All throughout there are typically a recycling bin next to the trash and they are clearly marked several ways. Constantly I see people being either unobservant or just don't care about recycling and dump their trash in the recycling bin. Why? How can one be so unaware or have such a disregard for following something so simple. I don't get it. Is it intentional? Do you guys experience similar stuff at your workplace if you have a similar setup?

Not so much what you describe probably because we have had this set up for 10 years, and I think people are just used to it.

We removed all desk side trash cans last year (I still think was dumb). We now have stations everywhere for landfill, recycling, compost and shredding. The problem was with the compost items, people were throwing away stuff they thought they could compost but couldn't. So we actually had to hire people to sort through the compost pile to pull out trash that can't be composted. Then they had to have a marketing campaign to teach people how to compost, and then re-label all of the bins with easier to follow pictures.

It's been interesting to see us transition all of our cafeteria packaging, paper products, and plastic wear to plant based compostable materials. It all goes to a local facility that turns the waste into compost which goes to the local farms that produce much of the food that is prepared and served on campus. Sorry for the tangent.

Did your company go for a LEED certification, or just design with efficiency in mind.

My first question would be, what isn't recyclable? Plastic and paper are both recyclable. What are they throwing away that isn't ?

I don't inspect everything but I see people dumping their lunch waste and other food related crap in the recycling bin in the breakroom and there are signs specifically says what should go in and what shouldn't. It is quite obvious people don't follow the signs.

Good god.

There are waste companies now with machinery that will automatically sort recyclables. Eventually, "recycling" will become a thing of the past.

In my area I have pay extra to recycle. So many people opt not to pay and not to recycle.

Glass is hard to re-use. In a previous life, one of my clients was a recycling center. They mountains of glass that no one wanted.
It's heavy to transport and not enough money in the recycling to make it worth fooling with though some municipalities will still take it but it is subsidized buy any profits made from other recyclable waste streams.

Here it's a breeze. In fact we recycle far more than we trash. Metal, plastic, glass and paper go into one container and trash in the other.

That's not surprising. The only time I had residential curb-side recycling I probably recycled 80% of my waste.

The food would be compost, correct? Some people just don't care. I would do it but my boss doesn't recycle.[laughing]

Technically correct but you don't mix compost type items with recyclable items. And some food waste you don't want in a compost mixture.

If you want to live like a Republican, vote like a Democrat.

If you want free stuff, vote democrat!:cool2: You should have seen that one coming! Have you played any recently? I've played in two tournaments where the avg temp was 94. In a new match play VSGA tournament, I played 36 holes in 95* temps at spring Creek CC. Have you had a chance to play there? Big, big golf course. It's just outside of Charlottesville. I went 20 holes with 19 pars and 1 birdie and my opponent holed a wedge from 115 on 16 to tie the match and then he won the semifinal on 20 with another almost hole out for eagle.

I played Spring Creek not long after it opened years ago. I don't remember much, but I do remember it was pretty nice at the time.

It's a big course. The super there was our number 2 guy at our club. He has a budget that almost doubles ours, probably at 1.1 million. Just a well kept course that is public during the week and private on the weekend.

Yesterday afternoon one of my daughters called saying she had a dead battery so I left work to jump her. I had a black shirt on, on asphalt at 4pm. I swear you could fry an egg on my back.

When I played in the US sEnior Open in the middle of July my wife wore her favorite color, black. She complained about the heat. I told my playing partner that the smartest woman in the world wore black in the middle of summer and never considered it might get hot.[roll]That's one of the things that I can't understand on tour, how some of those guys can wear black during the hottest times of the year.

My favorite golf shirt is an Izod purchased in early 2000's maybe and is solid black. I swear to you that even though it is black, the material is the coolest to the skin material of anything I have ever worn. I have attempted to find that model of shirt and have come up empty. I would easily pay $100 a shirt if I could find more and I would take any color.

I did love their reactions to my post though.

I'll recycle at work where the bins are marked, but I don't at home. I did in California because I was provided with recycling bins by the waste management company.

I really loved the posts thinking I'm some toothless hilljack because I have a big *** truck, failing to realize I also have a full size Range Rover and a Lexus convertible in the garage. Oh yea, I own my own plane too! Screams toothless hilljack doesn't it.
