Coming off active duty next month and want to take advantage of tax free firearms purchase.

I have been eye-balling a 40 cal CZ P01 and an M1a Springfield Armory 308.

Any comments on the 40 cal vs the 9mm and from those having a 308 rifle?

Nothing against the .308 or the M1A action, but if you're going to spend the money, get the same in a little more tactical/modded platform.

I'm a .40 or .45 guy. 9mm is a really hot round.

what platform is appealing to you?

just came from a gun show in Waco and there are so many version of a 308.

I have several 9mms but want a CZ P06 (40 cal). I really love CZ.

I was looking at the CZ's the other night, I understand the attraction.

I lucked on to a M1A at an estate sale 20 some years ago for 400 bucks. It was in pristine condition, a beautiful rifle. I wrote the guy a check on the spot. A few year's later Hollywood made "Saving Private Ryan" and the price on the old girls went through the roof. You can drive nails with that gun.

Like a lot of guys, I grew up in the era of "sporterized" mil-surplus rifles. Once you moved beyond slugs and a shotgun for deer hunting, you got stuck with sported out 1903 Springfield hand me down. The rifle I was given, passing through several cousins, had been screwed with so much, shooting it was sheer guess work. You might hit the deer, you might hit a tree 20 yards behind it, or you might hit a cow in the next field. That gun was a dog.

I have a P01 and gave up a SP01 (most accurate pistol I'll ever shot yet too heavy for my wife. I was a fool to get rid of it).

Probably buying another P01, P06, or PCR tomorrow.

I think I will be given an M1a as a command gift. Not sure. If not I'll buy one before I leave. i think. $1600.00.

I don't what I was thinking, mine's a Garand.

I understand the M1a has some of the same muzzle climb issues as the M-15 if you go that route. You're probably going to want something to counteract it.

I have a buddy who has an m1a, and that gun is a blast to shoot. I understand the attraction.

I prefer the 9mm, but I'm shooting paper. It's a cheaper round to shoot.

40 is a decent mix between the 9 and the 45. Not as much kick as a 45, so you're quicker to re-aquire your target, but not as quick as with a 9.

I dont shoot a lot. I do it to know my gun in case I need it. I wanted something strong enough to do the job and small enough my wife can use.

I went with the 9mm P01. Even purchased a nice tooled leather holster where I can carry inside or outside of my belt.

Texas is an awesome state.
