Looks like a hung jury on the first trial. I could offer speculation as to why it went hung, but I won't.

It was declared a mistrial, they plan on retrying. I saw this comment from a Baltimore Sun reader: "Good time and good reason to get some pre Christmas looting in."

Will they loot for the upper class shops and risk further police protection or take the lower end and have open shops?

The prosecutors overcharged on these cases; I don't know Maryland criminal procedure but I doubt they are be able to amend the charges to lesser offenses for this officer in the next trial. Due to the fact that the other officers haven't been tried yet, I'd bet the prosecution attempts to focus on prosecuting lesser charges for them. What they'd like is for one of them to be found guilty or take a deal and roll on the others for a reduction of their time due to cooperation--unlikely in this scenario. I'd bet they still aggressively try the officer who was driving the van though.

In addition to involuntary manslaughter, Porter had been charged with second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and misconduct in office. What would you have charged Porter with? If the jury could not reach a verdict on the last two charges, I don't think they could have agreement on any charge.

You might be right brother. If I was the prosecutor, I might try and cut a deal with the guy today and give him an assault misdemeanor in exchange for his cooperation. I'm glad I'm not involved in that kind of mess.

You are right, it is a mess. The prosecutor is in a no win position with all the cases connected with this. If she let them walk or gave them a slap on the wrist, Baltimore would still be burning.

When one of the people the city runs out there to have a press conference to tell everyone not to go off and start violence and destruction is a noted GANG LEADER......you got issues then! Yo! I couldn't believe that when I saw him speaking in front of the cameras.

I've been following this whole thing very close. Mostly because I live there. There is so much side action going on with Marilyn, Sheila Dixon, Stephanie Blake, and Nick Mosby it's ridiculous. These trials are a side show to what's really happening. Nick Mosby will be the next Mayor. Marilyn is likely gonna challenge Hogan in the Gubernatorial race if cancer doesn't get him first. The payoffs err I mean settlements with the Gray family were unbelievable. The family attorney is very well known. Upon receiving the settlement he donated $500k the following day to the PAC setup for Mosby.

I'm off topic with this a little, but ho was long have you been in the Baltimore area? I worked in DC from 95 through 01. Around that time there were old row houses in Baltimore going for next to nothing. You'd have to gut them and redo the interiors, but that's what most of the buyers were doing. The thought of doing that crossed my mind a time or two. I ended up buying in Silver Spring when the market was fairly low instead though. One thing I miss about living back there are brick houses. Most of the ones you see here are brick front on stick built. Back there it was the real deal. Gotta love the maintenance on a brick house - next to nothing.

I moved up on 06. Spent a couple of years in Cali and Iraq/AFG in the middle though. I'm a suburbanite though the hipsters have absolutely transformed that city. Some of the old shitholes have really started turned around. I read an article yesterday that Baltimore is the #2 food city in the country right now

Back in the day, my state would accept lower charge, but never a greater charge. IMO, they will not get anyone to play ball after the aggression that has been shown against the people in blue. Back then, we also had a blue muerta that was never questioned. Mafia - Omert'a , Police - blue wall of silence, politics - don't remember.
