From my memory it was 1996 when we won the NIT. Did they also make a run to the finals in 1984?

I believe it was a run to the NIT Final Four. I would have to look it up, but back in the 70's the NIT was still a pretty prestigious deal. And by '84, I believe the tournament had expanded from 48 to 64 by then. So it became easier to get into the NIT, but it still had some of that lasting importance at that point. To me, the run in the tournament in '96 wasn't as big of a deal among fans although the team played great basketball.

NCAA went from 48 teams to 64 in 1985. Moe Iba had a couple more teams that would have made a field of 64. Cipriano also had a few.

Got ya. Had the 96 team gotten its way into the NCAA tourney, with how they played that last month, I think they could have made the final 4.

A lot will depend on what kind of team ASU puts on the court. Some real talent on the Devils’ roster. But between injuries, suspensions and just not giving AF, they’ve been down to a handful of scholarship players.

ASU will send about 12 fans, though. U of A fans used to flock to Vegas for the PAC 12 Tournament, but ASU fans don’t travel even when the team is halfway good.

I agree with this, but that '96 had talent and got hot at the right time. Teams like that pull upsets in March. Well, Nebraska never does, but we see other teams do it.

Not trying to diminish that team at all - I agree that they were talented, but even more so, they were determined. Not sure I ever saw a team that wanted to win more than that one.

Had to go back to look at their schedule/results to remember why that team was in the NIT and not the NCAA tourney to begin with. They lost nine conference games in a row at the end of the season, and then lost in the first round of the Big 8 tournament. Apparently they needed to get more determined earlier on.

yeah - I totally misremembered that. I was thinking we lost early and surged late - lol. I went to quite a few games and it always seemed to me that those guys had a more competitive attitude than more recent teams. It appears that may not have been the case - our suck is timeless I suppose.

LOL - I too misremembered. Apparently I successfully wiped my brain of any memory of 9 game losing streaks from the Nee era

Had to go back to look at their schedule/results to remember why that team was in the NIT and not the NCAA tourney to begin with. They lost nine conference games in a row at the end of the season, and then lost in the first round of the Big 8 tournament. Apparently they needed to get more determined earlier on.

Also, Worster won't play Monday due to a foot injury he's been dealing with for quite a while. That might help explain his "meh" performance this year. I didn't think Worster was a great pickup, but I saw him play quite a bit for Utah and was expecting him to be a bit more productive.

Just heard this morning that the winner gets 300k, runner up gets 150k and the other final four get 50k each and something about nil which might still be evolving

So this is paid to the players or to the schools? As is they have sponsors (companies) willing to pay these players under the umbrella of NIL? How exactly does that work? Do they consider the players that play in the tournament a form of promotion or advertising for the companies that sponsor the event? If so, seems we’re getting really fast and loose with the hole NIL thing. This seems to live on the fringe of what I would call legit name image and likeness, but what do I know? I’m probably not understanding it completely and/or don’t have enough info.

I will say if this helps teams (that do well in this tournament) recruit and create more NIL opportunities for incoming transfers and/or recruits I’m all for it. But… if this is just to reward your existing players (who sucked so magnificently that they couldn’t be among the top 70 teams nationally) with a NIL “bonus” then this is garbage. JMO… we shouldn’t we rewarding current players or coaches for making “the crown frown” tournament.

I’m all for capitalism and rewarding players that generate money for their institutions/programs. But paying losers to play in a loser consolation tournament that nobody give a **** about, that will get garbage TV ratings, isn’t capitalism IMO. Ok, rant over.
