Is Nebraska a stepping-stone job?

Don’t get pissed off, contemplate it as a serious question. If a coach eventually builds a winner, do they move on to a better situation? I ask this as an Iowa grad living in Boulder for many years. My guess is Ferentz’s successor will be looking at the next job. Prime’s final destination is likely not Boulder. Just wondering if Nebraska is now in a similar situation.

Yes, it is now.

Derailing question:

The OP is a sock puppet trolling account - who does it belong to?

I don’t think it is. Because a stepping stone job is one you take to show great improvement and then leave. And that has never happened

I’ve been crucified for saying this for 15 years. It’s 100%!! A resume builder from a legacy name. No top coach or recruiter (especially) will stay past 2 or 3 years. No one wants to live on the road. It’s too hard and far from recruits. It’s a total stepping stone and never going to change. Example is this year more than ever. You get the prized recruit at the prized position with an old team, 15 or 16 SR starters and get 7 wins with a pancake schedule.

Would you rather work in a place like Lincoln or Tallahassee? Recruiting is easier, and the conference grind is much easier. Still have pressure as FSU, but can find athletes to make the 3-3-5 work.

Trolling aside, I could almost buy this if White wasn't leaving for a clearly inferior conference for a team practically begging to get into the B1G.

FSU is a better program than all but 3 or 4 B1G schools

I think it’s better than Penn st but that’s probably the line

Most of the SEC and Miami/Clemson/FSU stand out as pretty awesome gigs IMO. Most highly sought after opportunities in the very most recruiting fertile and good weather areas. USC(historically at least), Ohio St and Michigan are the only BIG schools that compare.

I’d add Oregon to that list considering their resources

The Nebraska job hasn’t exactly been a stepping stone for the last 4 Husker coaches. More like a water slide. Most were rescued by Nebraska from limbo or obscurity, including the current coach. They all left with a trunk load of money.

I think Pelini would have stayed. Riley would have stayed till he retired. Frost definitely would have stayed. I get the impression Rhule is at best 50/50. Would back to back 10 win seasons, for example, have him listening to calls from the SEC or more fertile recruiting areas?

We won’t really know until someone takes the NU job who’s actually good at it. The only coach since TO whose performance even allowed him to entertain the idea of moving on to greener pastures was Bo Pelini, and he couldn’t pull it off.

Rhule wants the Penn State. If Penn State offered he would be gone without hesitation. However, I don't really see him leaving Nebraska until Penn State is available.

Been a stepping stone to nowhere for coaches. Are there any coaches that have gone onto a more prestigious position since 1998?

Pelini openly admitted he wanted out. But his results -while pretty good - weren’t going to land him the upgrade he was looking for.

I’m curious why you think Frost “definitely” would have stayed? Is it because he bleeds scarlet and cream and he’s 1000% Husker through-and-through? Like, say, Trev Alberts?

I thought Frost was going to come in and have great success. He was great at UCF and I thought would have had a pipeline to FL recruits. It doesn’t always work out.

Nebraska is not a stepping-stone job. However, the job is more difficult than it appears on the surface and I'm sure Rhule knows that by now. Just like Frost, Riley, Pelini, Callahan, and Solich learned that. You see a program that has great tradition, facilities, resources, fan support, donor base, sellout streak, etc., etc., etc., etc.

The problem is the coaches get lulled into a false sense of security when things are going OK, and the fanbase is quick to sharpen our pitchforks when times get tough. It will take a special kind of person to right the ship. I'm still cautiously optimistic Rhule is the man for the job.

I've said this a million times, but I would guarantee that we will have won more games in the last 20 years if we were a program like Indiana, far from relevant (not this year) fans might go to a game every once in a while, but the majority of fans being casual. Running our football program is like campaigning every second of every day, year-round and it can be exhausting.

I'm convinced if everyone took a giant step back, our success on the field would take a giant leap forward. It'll happen eventually when our dominate runs in the 70's, 80's, and 90's aren't in the memory banks of any living Nebraskan. But the days of programs taking over college football over long periods of time are all but over.

Well a lot of people thought that, or at least hoped for it. I’m asking why anyone feels certain that Frost would have stayed at NU if he had been successful. I tend to doubt it, given that Frost was an entitled gasbag who thought he was God’s gift to football.

Buddy, things haven't gone Okay since Pelini. Nebraska hasn't had a winning season in over a decade.

If it’s not then explain to me like I’m 5 how it’s not? Which stud coach or recruiter has stayed? I’ll wait 🤪.
Have to be more specific because I haven’t seen any stud coach or recruiter leave that can’t be replaced. If you are referring to Tony then he is a decent coach whose system doesn’t work in the b10. If we were sold on him we could match anyone dollar for dollar. Should be telling to a lot of people that we are not willing to match fsu and it’s not because we don’t have the money.

"Okay since Pelini" is something us fans realized after the fact. We thought 9-4 wasn't good enough and fired a coach that had a 10 win season. He was a doosh, hot-headed and hates all of us, but that's besides the point. We're going to a bowl game this year for the first time in 2016 and we're melting down and there's people that want Rhule fired. That's all I'm saying. I realize I'm part of the problem...

He will have to get much better results here in order for Penn State to be interested

His system seemed to work just fine against everyone except Indiana this year.
