What is Tony White thinking?

Can anyone point to a time when a coach overhauled the entire staff after a dumpster fire season and didn't get fired the next year? It's the equivalent of a PIP for an employee. I also think Coach Prime will leave CU after next season. He will be the next coach at FSU. He fits there perfectly and that is where his heart is.

So Tony will just end up jobless in a year. If he stays at NU he will be a HC in a year.

Mad at Rhule for bringing in Phil Snow to look over his shoulder would be my guess.

If it plays out at FSU that Prime is named the HC a year from now, Tony may have cut of his nose to spite his face. **** wasn't going right for a few games and he got blitzed by Indiana.

Maybe he's tired of coaching a defense that has to be perfect because of our inept offense. Or maybe Florida's weather and lifestyle offer more than Nebraska's does in his eyes. Who knows...and honestly who cares. We are pathetic.

You are correct but a lot of people think they can make enough of a difference themselves and save the world. (Or FSU in this case).

Just ask Bob Diaco, Tony Samuel, or any one of the assistants in 2003 including Bo Pelini. The boss still gets axed and you are out of a job after 1 season. But these days most assistants get 2 year contracts so financially it’s not terrible

You sir are correct. His defense played perfectly for all but one single play and because the offense and special teams choked so bad it ended up being a giant difference in the outcome.
Imagine being 99% perfect at work but the group always fails. You get sick of it eventually

I assume there's sarcasm in this.

I'm more concerned with what current players are thinking. We have some potentially good ones waiting in the wings, and I have no clue how much White factored in them wanting to be here.

I just think White is a guy who can't see the forest for the trees. His future prospects to move into a head coaching role would be much better if he stayed at NU and had a solid year next year. Impatience and pride gets in the way of better judgment though. Which is probably an indictment on White being head coach material in the first place. So it goes, I'm much more worried about losing Knighton in all honesty.

I’m sure Snow looking over his shoulder is playing some part in this is what I’m thinking.

FSU has a higher ceiling than Nebraska as evidenced by the past 14 years. Bringing someone in to loo over his shoulder isn’t gonna help matters.

Speaking of that, is Rhule just throwing stuff at the wall to see if it sticks? How enticing is being a coordinator under him if there is a good chance he brings someone in to undermine you?

I’m betting TW got tired of Rhule’s preaching and acting tough. TW was the only coach that was doing his job and getting good results so I can see where he would be pissed that someone was brought in to look over his shoulder.

He was planning on moving on from the very beginning. He was looking at HC jobs last year

One thing if he took a HC job somewhere. He did not. Another Rhule failure. I know you will go to all lengths to def me Rhule. But anyone with common sense sees Rhule is drowning right now. Here’s to hope that he can figure it out.

It's ok though, I'm sure Rhule will still allow his players to not shake opponents hands and feel all tough.

Better he leave now so we can be past the annual he's leaving drama (I know this is only year 2, but if he stays we will do the same thing next year) and get someone in here committed to Nebraska. Some players/recruits will leave if he does, perhaps. But FSU is going to already have athletes as good as what would be leaving from here and its own 105 roster limit to deal with. How many will leave if they aren't assured a spot at FSU?

What has changed is that Rhule can hire “old” Phil and he doesn’t have to recruit on the road. Ditto Dana. Previously, you couldn’t afford to have coordinators who didn’t also recruit on the road.

As for Snow’s ability, I was an admin at ASU when they shut out our two-time defending national champions. A young Phil Snow was DC. The most amazing part was the ASU defense the prior year was terrible in Snow's first year as a DC. Obviously he improved a lot in one year and was new to coordinating.

Damn Snow made the next Monday at work hell for me!

White is now on to his 4th DC job in 6 years, all by his choice and most of his moves could objectively be argued as lateral ones. Clearly he is not afraid of change, and we'll probably never know the real reasons behind his decision. But the fact that he was the highest paid assistant in NU history certainly makes you think it isn't about the money, and the fact that he's taking Knighton with him certainly makes you wonder if he wasn't happy with Rhule and/or the situation at NU.

Of course he wasn’t happy. If you were him, would you be happy when Rhule brought in Phil Snow to look over your shoulder? And one can assume there had been some second guessing leading up to that decision.

I don’t think the change is necessarily bad for us but the timing right before signing day could be terrible.

I'm thinking that Tony White and Rhule had a major falling out over something that none of us knew about. Either that or White will be the coach in waiting at FSU once the current head coach gets fired there.

I highly doubt he'll be the head coach in waiting at fsu. Their sights set higher. I think White's defense will do well there. More offensive beef up front in b1g and better DBs in Florida than we've had here at NU

probably didn't help that Rhule publicly lobbied against him taking a head coaching job for weeks last year

This would be the part that "scared" me.

Maybe he will get a 3 year contract so even if they all get canned next year at FSU he is safe. I don't know, that would really be unlikely.

If so Tony will just take his 2 year guaranteed salary and find another DC job, those are always available, especially if FSU has a much improved defense.

perhaps he hates the cold *** weather in Nebraska
perhaps he got tired of rhule
perhaps he has different aspirations that don't align with anything the typical Nebraska fan thinks
perhaps he's tired of Nebraska
perhaps this is just the new "typical" in coaching to coincide with NIL
I've been to Tallahassee. They have some very nice looking talent there that's not all bundled up 4 months a year.

Combine Tony with the very capable and well liked Pot Roast and it's not good for NU.

Tony did not like Butler coming in and having Rhule's implied authority to change coverages and scheme. Then you add in Snow babysitting Tony.

No doubt, Tony has been looking for a new job and said "**** it, you wanna come with me Terrance?"
