Our first dog passed June of '23, we loved her to death but she was an at-home dog that was with my work from home wife and the little kids. We got another dog that is one now and and goes EVERYWHERE with me. I'm lucky because I brought her to my office from day 1, and my bosses were like "I guess we have an office dog now? Cool." I think once you start the cycle you have to have a dog for life because a new dog is the only thing that can heal the hurt of losing the last dog.

I never had a dog growing up and had really never gotten to know any dog very well in my life.

That all changed when my daughter married a couple of years ago and I got to know their dog. He is so incredible, funny & smart and I think I'm the only one who lightly massages his neck - and he absolutely loves it when I do that.

I had a pug growing up, well, sort of. Got her before I left for college and that dog became my dads best friend. For 13 years or so. It crushed him when she finally passed. They were two peas in a pod.

I love the idea...hell I visit my neighbors just so I can pet theirs...I just can't commit to the 24/7 attention they require at this time....plus, I habe a 10 y/o cat who once chose me for his owner, who would hate it. So I owe it to him as well.

Back in 2016 when I divorced, I ended up buying the bouse across the street, literally, so I could be close to my kids...moved across the street and left my cat behind....about 2 weeks go by and i'm in the driveway and he is out...I call his name and he looks at me, twists his head in confusion, realizes who I am, and comes running across the street to be with me and never went back to his old house. So I owe it to him to let him live out his retirement in peace and as the only pet.

Especially with a puppy, it is like having a newborn in the house. It is a lot of work and attention.

I think what happens is a lot of times people with older dogs forget what that first year or so is like. Old dogs that have a routine, that don't have accidents, that don't chew on stuff...that is when it is super awesome.

I am currently driving from Denver to LA with my wife to watch the USC game...why am I not flying? We are taking our two little dogs with us, I don't want to board them or burden neighbors with them - plus I'm happier when they are with me. I echo the guy earlier....get the dog, you will never regret it, their unconditional love is so pure.

Same same. Our dog died in June, we said let's wait at least a year before we get another one. I woke up two months later on Labor Day and said "I'm getting a dog today." And I did. The depression lifted like a fog!

I am probably in the minority on this one, but I am a cat guy. They are such unique animals, they are aloof, needy, independent, loving, crazy, hyper, and tired all in the span of 60 seconds, kind of like a woman, but give unconditional love. The wife has allergies, so we can't have one, but our daughter has two now. When she comes home and brings them it is the best. I get to see my two favorite females, my daughter and her female cat. Her second one is a male kitten now and he is a riot. When he is awake he is on the go, but a total lap cat who purrs like a diesel engine.

I built a catio under our deck so when they come home they can get outside and hone their predator skills. I sit out there with them for hours on end.

I've really been thinking about getting a cat to be a pal with my dog. I see great videos of dogs and cats hanging around together. My luck would be that I would get a cat that hates the dog.

Ha! Cats hate everyone and and everything at one point or another during the day. Just kidding.

Hit up a local shelter and see if they need a foster for a cat/kitten and take it for a test run. It is pretty wild how many cats are fostered in a house with dogs. It is pretty funny seeing those videos of kittens and big dogs playing around.

Just lost my Mastiff in mid-August and he was my 24/7 companion; a wife/child substitute that made me joyful and content each and every day. I told myself I would not get another one -- as this was my fourth Mastiff and they tend not to live long -- but within 6 weeks of his passing I was singing a different tune. I am empty without a Mastiff, so I am getting my first ever Christmas puppy on December 18. I'm still grieving the loss but know everything will change soon, so I'm leaning into the grief until then.

Same, but with a parrot, who we very unexpectedly lost in July. I think it's important to grieve, and that's a different time period for all of us.

I've finally come to the realization that I may never feel ready to move on from that little guy. He was very smart, affectionate, and had just the right level of OCD about him. He wasn't a slave to his OCD tendencies like some previous birds I've had.

I believe it's time I started looking for my next pet bird.
