Reminiscing.
Can't remember if it was 1968, 70 or 72. I grew up in Tucson. No pro teams then, UA was not doing well, and ASU was hated. Had a HS FB teammate from Nebraska and he would brag about NU and how they played great FB. So I tuned in (they were on TV a lot then my buddy told me) when they were playing CU in Bolder. CU was jumping and screaming, all psyched out, even the announcers were noting how extremely fired up the home team was, and was making a statement. NU came out a bit late. Quietly, no fanfare, no jumping around, just straight and serious. Gotta admit, that got to me; I loved it! I mean, who did that? Nobody!! As the players walked onto the field CU players and fans were taunting them, pointing and gesturing. NU players just turned their heads one way, then the other, just quietly looking around. Coach Bob Devaney was all business, and so were the Huskers. That was just SO COOL!!
Well, as the game started, NU was all business on the field. They owned the LOS, and pretty much had their way and simply dismantled CU. Bolder went silent. At the end, the Huskers, just like they started, quietly and politely left the field. I was hooked! Eventually lived in NE for 15 years. Now, glad to be back home in AZ and retired, but NE will always be my second home, and Huskers remain my favorite team (UA though is now sparky, took it to CU last year, kept them from bowling, yay!).
While I was in NE, I went to many games, sky box sometimes too! Met some names up there. Way cool. Was GREAT! It was Solich's first year, and the beginning of the deline. Before NE, I lived in OKC, and I got to go to many OU games, the locker room, even met Schnellenberger. As a Husker fan, I respected them, but never could warm up to them. I told them I was a Husker fan and they hissed and tsked at me. But as a Husker fan, having learned from watching from that first time, I would just quietly hold my ground and politely say nothing. Tommy Frazier didn't need any bragging from me.
Being a Husker fan has been so richly rewarding! GBR!!
Odds game now favors us, does it not?
